My kitten has lumps on her belly, what could it be?

Hi everyone,

Four days ago I noticed a lump on my kitten's belly (she's 6 months old). I called the vet straight away and they told me to call back in a week if it changed or seemed to hurt her (given we're in lockdown).

Today she has several lumps all over her tummy and they've grown, but they don't seem to be painful. I called the vet again and spoke to the out-of-hours vet, who told me it might be due to her being in heat for the first time. But they didn't really know for sure...

Anyway, I'd like to know if you could tell me a bit more (hopefully to put my mind at ease...) before I head to the vet tomorrow morning.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Hi again,

The idea that it’s better to let a female cat have a litter before being spayed is a total old wives’ tale. All the scientific research agrees on this. Early neutering (no later than 6 months old) only has benefits in terms of health, house-training, safety, temperament, affection towards humans and longevity. Plus, you should know that a kitten as young as yours getting pregnant might indeed be fertile already, but she doesn’t have the physical or behavioural maturity for things to go well.

I’d really advise you not to let her out before the op, even if she begs to go. Having had cats all my life, all neutered very young, I guarantee they are incredibly affectionate. The op makes them even closer to their owners, both males and females alike.

Hi there, those are probably just her nipples. She’ll start coming into season at around 6 months, so don’t wait too long to get her spayed.

Thanks for your reply. Is it okay if I let her have a litter before I have her spayed? (Maybe to make her a bit more cuddly; I’ve also heard it’s actually better for them to have one litter before they're spayed?)

    Hi there,

Those are likely just her teats. She'll start becoming fertile from 6 months old, so don't delay in getting her spayed.
