My cat swallowed a bin bag string

Hi everyone,

My 1-year-old cat seems to have swallowed a bin liner drawstring yesterday or the day before.

I realised because she's not eating or drinking, she's being sick, and she's straining to go to the toilet. About 10cm of the string is now sticking out of her bottom, and I was wondering if it will just keep coming out on its own.

Obviously, I haven't pulled it; I thought I'd wait a little while to see if she passes it herself, otherwise I'll call an out-of-hours vet. I'm so scared of it getting worse, so I'm watching her closely.

What do you think?

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, it happened today – she's swallowed a bit of string from the bin bag. What should I do?

This happens quite often; cats love the drawstrings on bin bags. However, there's a real risk of complications for your cat. She could end up with a bowel obstruction if the string gets tangled in her intestines, so get her to the vet straight away. You definitely did the right thing by not pulling on it. +1

I’d recommend seeing a vet as soon as possible. A neighbour’s cat swallowed some thread that got so tangled in its gut that they weren't able to operate, and the poor thing had to be put to sleep. I don’t want to panic you, and of course it depends on how much thread was swallowed, but it’s definitely better not to wait and to get them checked out.

Hi, my little Maïa also ate a bit of bin bag string once, but she was fine. I'd definitely recommend seeing a vet though, as it can get serious very quickly!

The day I got a kitten, he swallowed a pine needle. I had to take him to the vet for an enema :)

Vet, vet! As Anima said, there’s a huge risk of a bowel obstruction.

This happens quite often; cats absolutely love bin bag ties. However, there is a real risk of complications for your cat—it can cause a bowel obstruction if the string gets tangled in the intestines, so you should head to the vet straight away. You definitely did the right thing by not pulling on it.
