Evening all,

I was wondering if it's normal for my cat to stop using his bed even though he's been sleeping in it for quite a while now? Does anyone have any tips to encourage him to use it again?

Cheers, have a lovely evening!

My cats change their spots whenever they feel like it, so I’ve completely done away with cat beds.

They use the bed, the wardrobe, shelves, chairs, under the eaves, the sofa, armchairs, and even the roof of the garden shed.

Not one of my cats uses their bed anymore, except sometimes when I put the two of them on a chair outside, out of the wind and in the sun.

Yes, but just a heads-up—you need to pick the right spot and the right orientation. It’s not quite as simple as you might think. Plus, cats love to switch places every now and then; they have their moments when they want their bed up high, then under a table, in a corner, on the armchair, or the sofa. It changes depending on the time of day, too. There’s quite a bit of a rotation with mine. They love being near a radiator when it’s cold or in front of a south-facing window.

Ulalie, you’re very lucky, it doesn’t work for me; maybe I just haven’t got the knack with my cats.

The only trick to get them to use their beds is to move them to a different spot. Sometimes just moving it a metre is enough for it to work. In my house, I often move the beds around when I see they’re being ignored, and that usually does the trick.

Hi there, I don't have any tricks for you; you've got a cat, not a dog! A cat makes its own mind up, so there’s no point trying to force it—your cat will always get the upper hand. I live with four cats, and it’s very common for them to switch spots for the night or for a nap. No cat has just one single place to sleep or nap, unlike us humans (beds) or dogs (baskets). It’s perfectly normal for yours to sleep outside of their bed, even if you keep moving that bed around.

Maybe he prefers being elsewhere because it’s warmer; mine sleep right on the floor when it’s hot.

Ideally, it’s best to have a few different beds or baskets.

You should move his bed to wherever he’s sleeping now—it’s probably a quiet, tucked-away spot.

    Evening,

It’s impossible (and pointless) to try and force a cat to settle where they don't, or no longer, want to be. The cat is the one who decides, and their preferences can change over time. Plus, some cats will turn their nose up at their bed if it’s just been washed, as they no longer recognise their own reassuring scent.

Are you saying your cat doesn't sleep in their bed anymore? In my house, the cats have their favourite sleeping spots, and it's not necessarily the original bed we got for them... they like a bit of peace and quiet (in a cupboard) and especially love being high up (on top of furniture, the bed, the sofa, shelves, etc.) and somewhere warm, so on top of the fish tank too. I’m not sure you can really force a cat to pick a spot (unlike a dog); cats are territorial and very much attached to their home, their home comforts, and their routines.
