My cat's stopped purring

Hello everyone,

Over the last few weeks, my partner and I have been a bit worried because our 11-month-old girl has stopped purring.

She’s never been the most affectionate cat, but when she was in the mood, she used to purr really loudly sometimes. However, since we moved house two months ago, she hasn’t purred at all. On the flip side, she’s meowing a lot more to get our attention and for head scratches.

She’s cuddling us less, and when she does, there are no purrs, even though she’s looking for strokes and is sticking to us like glue.

I’m really worried because I’m scared she’s unhappy... and I don't know how to fix it.

She’s an indoor cat who only goes outside when we visit my parents in the countryside once a month. We adopted her when she was two months old and we play with her as much as possible. We’re trying our best to make sure she’s happy, but this lack of purring is really worrying us...

Do you have any ideas what could be causing this? And what we should do?

Thanks in advance!

    Evening :)

Sometimes, when a cat stops purring, it’s one of the warning signs of an underlying health issue or that they’re feeling out of sorts. It could be linked to an illness or a period of acute stress. Your cat will usually show other symptoms too, such as becoming withdrawn, going off their food, tending to hide away, etc.

I know moving house is tough, but she’s done it before and it went really well (when we moved to a different part of the country, we had to stay in an Airbnb for two months where she was very settled). I hope things get better with time if that’s the issue! And no, there haven't been any new additions to the family.

    Hi again,

Moving house is really stressful, as cats are such territorial animals. It can sometimes take them several months to get back to their old selves. Other than that, has there been a new pet or person in the home recently?

(I’m not a big believer in "silent heat" myself).

Yeah, she’s been spayed since she was six months old… I’ve actually been wondering about that. I read somewhere that even spayed females can have a sort of ‘mini-heat’, but I’m not sure if that’s true, so I’d rather not believe it!

Hi there, Has your cat been spayed? At 11 months old, she’s well past puberty, and those hormones can really change a cat’s behaviour. Spaying offers nothing but benefits, even for indoor cats who never go outside (like mine). Going through heat cycles without mating is far too often a cause of mammary cancer, even in young cats. Whatever you do, never give a cat the contraceptive pill — all the studies show just how harmful it is.
