My little Louna is in a really bad way...

About ten days ago, I took her to the vet because she’d stopped eating altogether; she was hiding away and even seemed scared of me.

My cat is in a really bad way...

It was a right struggle getting her to the vet because she absolutely hates travelling... but anyway...

The vet diagnosed her with gingivitis, so she was put on Dermipred (steroids) for 6 days and an antibiotic—I can't remember the name of it now.

She seemed better for the first five days, but since then she’s been going downhill day by day, and today I can't even get her to eat a thing.

I called my vet back, and they’ve advised me to keep her on the Dermipred for another 5 or 6 days, but I honestly don't know how to get the meds into her now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has this ever happened to your moggy too? I'm desperate for some help, please. Thanks in advance... :(

I wouldn’t wait 5 days – it’s not normal for them to be feeling poorly after treatment –

The best thing would be to see another vet – don’t hang about –

Don't wait five days! Some vets really get on my nerves (and that’s putting it mildly!). This little girl was doing a bit better after the meds, but she’s poorly again now – how can that vet possibly think she’s going to improve? If a cat stops responding to medication, they aren't going to get any better! Either go back to that vet or find a different one, but you can’t just do nothing! This is an emergency!!!!!

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking of doing. I wanted to try and give him his meds first, but I’ll definitely be heading back to the vet this week...

I’ll try using a syringe, that’s a great idea, thanks!

First off, I'm wondering if the vet has ruled out him having swallowed something... because whether it's gingivitis or not, if he's going downhill, I’d be getting a second opinion if I were you. Sometimes they just treat the most obvious thing without bothering to look any deeper... I had a cat who stopped eating after a lot of stress, and I had to syringe-feed him with a large special syringe (using diluted wet food). I’d put his meds in there, so he didn't have a choice. It’s a bit nasty and I felt awful doing it, but he slowly built his strength back up until he was eating on his own again. Also, try a bit of corn syrup on the roof of the mouth: it stimulates the appetite and gives them a bit of an energy boost. Good luck!
