My little Louna is in a really bad way...

About ten days ago, I took her to the vet because she’d stopped eating altogether; she was hiding away and even seemed scared of me.

My cat is in a really bad way...

It was a right struggle getting her to the vet because she absolutely hates travelling... but anyway...

The vet diagnosed her with gingivitis, so she was put on Dermipred (steroids) for 6 days and an antibiotic—I can't remember the name of it now.

She seemed better for the first five days, but since then she’s been going downhill day by day, and today I can't even get her to eat a thing.

I called my vet back, and they’ve advised me to keep her on the Dermipred for another 5 or 6 days, but I honestly don't know how to get the meds into her now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has this ever happened to your moggy too? I'm desperate for some help, please. Thanks in advance... :(

Evening everyone!! I’m finally here to give you an update on my little Louna!!! It’s great news... she’s doing much better. I picked Louna up late Saturday afternoon and as soon as we got home, she was begging for food as if she was starving... I was so happy to see her like that. She made me laugh because she was glued to my side; she followed me all over the house and as soon as I sat on the sofa, she came to snuggle up in my arms!! You can imagine I was over the moon – I couldn't have asked for more... I have to keep her on antibiotics for 8 days and wait for the test results from the vet regarding the virus... I wanted to thank you all for your support... I stumbled across this site by chance and I’m really glad I did... Thanks, See you soon, Nath

So glad her operation went well! I know it’s always a bit of a shock seeing your cat in that state. When I had mine spayed, she was terrified and hissing at the vet nurse when I went to collect her, but as soon as she saw me, she calmed down and gave me a desperate little meow. Anyway, I hope you get to bring your girl home today, she’ll be feeling a bit more like herself by now. Keep us posted.

    Hi everyone

I went to see my Louna yesterday.. it felt a bit strange because she was still under the anaesthetic..

The vet told me that it all went well.. they had to pull a tooth out because the roots were infected.. my poor sweet girl.. she was a bit out of it but when she heard my voice she lifted her head to look at me. I gave her loads and loads of kisses.. I have to call late morning and hopefully I’ll be picking her up this afternoon.. I can’t wait for her to be back home.. to give her lots of cuddles..

    See you later..

    Nath

    Hello everyone,

Yes, I’ve changed vets... and it’s true that she was seen to straight away. It’s the same practice where there are several vets, including one who is very highly recommended... and obviously I wasn't able to see him at the time. The only thing is, everyone at the practice is still very young, between 25 and 30... mind you, if they're there, they must be competent enough.

I can’t wait for this afternoon to at least get some news about my girl... and especially to see her this evening.

You know, @candymarie, I’m not entirely sure of her exact age; it was the vet who told me she was under 10... specifically because of the state of her teeth.

She’s a kitty I adopted about 5 years ago who was very feral... with the help of a local rescue, we managed to catch her and get her spayed because she had two kittens with her when I found her... and same for the kittens, we had them neutered once they were old enough, of course.

Louna has become an indoor cat now, but her kittens are still around outside as they’re very feral... I’ve always looked after them and fed them... and with this freezing weather at the moment, they really need it.

I’ll give you all an update this evening...

Good evening and well done – you definitely did the right thing. She must have been in a lot of pain, and it wasn't going to get better without intervention. The dental will do her a world of good. I hope you have her back home and in full health very soon. Hang in there in the meantime.

She’s a bit young to have severe gingivitis – poor thing, she must have been in so much pain.

Have you changed vets, like GANACHE did?

Yes, it’s for her own good; it really breaks your heart to see our kitties suffering. Ask your vet if you can pay in instalments, it’ll make things easier for you. Let us know how things are tomorrow evening. Is it a different vet from last time?

Well, here’s the verdict... severe gingivitis. First off, it was a right nightmare getting her there as planned. I didn't put her in a carrier, but in a laundry basket with her little cosy bed, and we put another basket over the top... that didn't stop her from properly scratching my friend who was holding her as best he could! They’ve kept my little girl in... sniff :( She’s having a scale and polish tomorrow morning. Poor thing... the vet showed me her mouth and her gums were bright red with swellings at the back. I just hope she hasn't got any abscesses. They’re keeping her until Saturday. I’m so sad without her... I feel like I’ve abandoned her, but I know it’s for her own good. I won't be able to see her until tomorrow evening. They’ll give her another steroid jab in about ten days and do an extra test to see if there’s a virus – well, that’s what I gathered anyway. I know it’s going to cost me a fortune, but honestly, I don't care. I can’t stand seeing her in pain, because it’s breaking my heart too. I love my Louna so much. I’ll keep you all posted tomorrow evening...

muse, we're all eagerly waiting to hear the new vet's verdict; I really hope they'll figure out what's wrong with her.

Candymarie, yes, it's a hibiscus. I took that photo at the Deshaies Botanical Garden in Guadeloupe, which was once owned by the famous French comedian Coluche.
