My little Louna is in a really bad way...

About ten days ago, I took her to the vet because she’d stopped eating altogether; she was hiding away and even seemed scared of me.

My cat is in a really bad way...

It was a right struggle getting her to the vet because she absolutely hates travelling... but anyway...

The vet diagnosed her with gingivitis, so she was put on Dermipred (steroids) for 6 days and an antibiotic—I can't remember the name of it now.

She seemed better for the first five days, but since then she’s been going downhill day by day, and today I can't even get her to eat a thing.

I called my vet back, and they’ve advised me to keep her on the Dermipred for another 5 or 6 days, but I honestly don't know how to get the meds into her now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has this ever happened to your moggy too? I'm desperate for some help, please. Thanks in advance... :(

Yes, thanks, that's a good idea about the baby food, I haven't tried that yet... it breaks my heart because I found her rummaging in the cupboard... she knows her food is in there and she's even pestering me for it, that's the worst part, but as soon as I give it to her she just bolts...

I've called my vet and I've got an appointment this evening at 5:30pm...

    I'll keep you all posted...

euqinorev: very funny! Mamie-chat is right: if she associates her food bowl with her pain, she’ll probably prefer eating from a saucer or a different bowl. (It’s the same principle as cats with a UTI avoiding their litter tray...)

Oh really, so eating from a saucer helps with sore gums? You never stop learning on here.........

Take the bowl away for now and put her food on a flat saucer instead; she might be less scared of it hurting then.

You're right, baby food jars are a great idea with a syringe -

And maybe some plain yoghurt via syringe as well.

Give baby food jars a go for now. It’s not the perfect nutritional balance for a cat, but it’ll still keep her strength up and be easier for her to manage until she’s fully recovered.

Poor kitty! The pain must be so bad that she’s frightened to eat. I hope the vet can find a way to help.

    Hi everyone,

I’m back with an update on my Louna...

Ugh.. not great, though I’ve seen worse...

She’s still not eating on her own.. she seems scared of her bowl.. I’ve tried everything — tuna, salmon, even the most expensive pouches.. nothing works. I have to have her on my lap and practically hold the bowl right up to her face; she eats then, but she growls the whole time..

I think her gums are still sore..

I’m going to give my vet a ring to get some more info because she had some tests done and I haven’t had the results back yet..

    Hehe..

    Thanks so much everyone..

My Louna is doing much better.. except she’s still got this thing about her food bowl..

She won’t go and eat on her own, I’m forced to take it right over to her..

To give you an idea of how impractical it is.. she sits on a kitchen chair under the table.. and I have to get down on my hands and knees to feed her..

I’ll keep doing it as long as she’s on her antibiotics, but after that the little madam is going to have to go there herself..

She’s a clever one though! They say cats have no memory.. I find that hard to believe..

Erm, I didn’t quite catch that (Former User), but Louna is indeed my little girl ;)

    Love to all,

    Muse
