My cat is destroying my doors and the door seals

Hi there,

I have a calico cat who is nearly 4 years old. She's been spayed and lives in a flat with occasional access to the balcony.

At night, she scratches at the door between my bedroom and the living room (there's a hallway between the two). She isn't just sharpening her claws; she hooks them into the side of the door as if she's trying to pry it open. Unfortunately, the door doesn't sit flush in the frame, so not only does it make an absolute din, but the door itself is in a right state—the wood is completely shredded and the paint is ruined. She does this every night, especially when my boyfriend is staying over. I don't want her sleeping in the bedroom with me; she's never been used to it and she knows perfectly well that it's out of bounds.

It's the same story with the seal on my front door; she's completely mangled it with her claws and now there are holes letting a draught in. I reckon it's because of the neighbourhood cats that often hang around on my landing—she must be able to smell them and it's driving her mad.

I'm at my wit's end and don't know how to stop her. I've already tried repellent sprays and Feliway. If anyone has any suggestions or is going through the same thing, please let me know...

Alternatively, there's the 'paw pad' technique xD

Hi there, does she have scratching posts in a few different spots around the house, including right in front of those two doors? If not, you could always try a deterrent spray, though not all cats are sensitive to them. Another trick is using double-sided tape; cats generally hate the texture, so once they’ve put their paws on it, they tend not to do it again. When she does it, you really need to ignore her and then praise her when she’s not doing it. If she’s doing it for attention and you end up telling her off or going over to her, she’ll see that as a result. She’ll have got the attention she wanted by doing something you don't want her to do.
