My cat has licked its flea treatment

Hi everyone

I’m really worried about my cat. I put his flea spot-on between his shoulder blades so he wouldn’t be able to lick it, but 10 minutes later I saw him licking the area and swallowing the product. I wanted to know what the risks are or if there's anything to worry about? (It’s a repellent flea treatment from Francodex).

So if anyone can help me out, thanks in advance 😐

Hi, the instructions for this product say to spray from about 30cm all over the animal. I just wanted to know if it's a problem if they lick themselves?

Flea and tick treatments shouldn't actually go between the shoulder blades... For a start, it needs to be applied to the head and the base of the skull... That way they can't lick it off...

Good evening, this happened yesterday but he isn't showing any symptoms. I'm still keeping a close eye on him, though.

    Thanks, everyone.

    Hi there,

As mentioned above, there shouldn't be any risk to your cat if they licked near the product without actually coming into contact with it. However, if they have swallowed any, don't hesitate to call the Animal PoisonLine or your nearest emergency vet as soon as you notice any symptoms at all.

    Kind regards,

    Alexia

If the flea treatment is applied right at the base of the neck, the cat's tongue won't be able to reach it—that's exactly why you need to target that specific spot. Is it possible you just saw him licking the area around it? If he doesn't show any signs of poisoning over the next few days, he probably hasn't ingested any of the product.

When did this happen? Keep a close eye on him, and at the slightest sign of anything worrying, get him to the vet.
