My cat has a lump on his neck

Hi everyone,

Yesterday, while I was stroking my 3-year-old cat, I made a worrying discovery: at the base of his neck, there is a lump about 4-5 cm wide. It feels hard to the touch and it doesn't seem to be causing him any pain.

I'm planning to take him to the vet at the end of the week if it's still there, or sooner if it gets any bigger.

We had to have my previous cat put down when he was 14 due to cancer and I don't want to go through the same thing with Coocky.

Could it be a cyst? An abscess? A tumour?

I noticed a few days ago that he has fleas, could it be related to that? Or maybe ticks?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi, I’ve just read through all the comments. My cat, who’s 18 months old, has a lump on his neck. He’s lost a lot of weight and is sleeping all the time—do you think it’s serious? Thanks a lot :(

So, just a quick update... After a nightmare of a night imagining the absolute worst, I took him to the vet this morning. The journey was awful; my poor kitty didn't stop meowing the whole way and even hurt his claws trying to get out of his carrier. When we arrived for 9am, we weren't in there for long as the vet spotted an abscess straight away – so it was more of a scare than anything else, thankfully 😌 He had to stay in all morning and we’re picking him up this afternoon. Do you think he’ll be allowed back outside straight away? And if not, how long should I keep him in for?

Hi, I think it’s an abscess as well, they grow incredibly fast. My cat had one on his cheek; we hadn’t noticed a thing the night before, then the next morning it was a lump the size of a ping-pong ball! It’s quite a shock, especially when the vet drains the pus. Best of luck, Cookiette

Yes, do keep us posted! If it is an abscess, the vet will give you some antibiotics and might even lance it? My Newfie had one after a bite from a wild animal on his neck! It burst after a few days and it really wasn't a pretty sight! I cleaned it with some disinfectant from the vet and a course of antibiotics! He lost his fur in that spot but it's all grown back now.

I’m also hoping for your sake that it’s an abscess and not a tumour. Keep us posted!

I think it’s got bigger since yesterday, so I called the vet. She said it might be an abscess, so I’ve got an appointment for tomorrow. I really hope it’s that and not a tumour 😔

Check to see if there is a wound on that lump; if there is, it's probably an abscess. In that case, you'll need to take him to the vet to have it treated. However, if you notice any change in behaviour (eating less, sleeping more, etc.), take him to the vet straight away. And if it doesn't clear up quickly, see a vet.

    Hi there,

It’s hard to say what it could be... Only a vet will be able to give you a diagnosis, with a biopsy if needed....
