Kitten with a bloated tummy

Hi everyone,

Yesterday morning, while out on a Sunday walk with my husband, we found a tiny little kitten crying by the side of a path.

After catching it, we brought it home. I gave it a wash in the sink (its paws were filthy) and noticed it has fleas and its tummy is bloated.

I've kept it in the bathroom (since I have other cats and didn't want them getting fleas) tucked up warm in a little box.

It wouldn't eat anything all day, so I called the out-of-hours vet and managed to take it in last night.

The vet examined it, weighed it, and checked its temperature and blood sugar. She then managed to get it to eat a bit of that 'a/d' wet food or something similar.

Weight-wise: it's about 1.5 lbs (704g), estimated age: 6 weeks, temperature and blood sugar were both fine.

She gave me some worming treatment, which I gave it last night around 7 pm after getting back from the vet's.

I offered it some more wet food which it ate; it even went back to the bowl for more on its own. It's used the litter tray for a wee twice, once yesterday and once this morning.

However, no poo yet (so this morning I put a bit of liquid paraffin in its wet food – one of my other cats gets constipated, so I use it sometimes), and this morning its little belly is still swollen. I was searching online during the night and saw that FIP can also cause a bloated tummy. The vet told me its general condition was good and that it's probably just worms, but I'm panicking now I've seen the info about FIP...

How long do you think it takes for the wormer to work? And for the swelling to go down?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Blue Cat, It definitely did the trick! I took him to the vet around 2.30 pm and they told me to wait until Thursday at the latest. When we got back, he was charging around the bathroom like a mad thing with his two toys, and 10 minutes later he went to his litter tray and did a perfect poo! :) So I'm really happy and relieved; he’s so funny when he plays, even if he’s still very clumsy! :)

    Hi there,

Thank you for the rescue. Don’t worry too much, nine times out of ten a big bloated tummy is just down to worms. With the worming treatment and the liquid paraffin, when he finally goes, he’ll really go...

Just be careful to only use a tiny amount of oil and don’t give him any more until he’s been; it will work its way through his system gradually.

Hi @Kirikiki Thanks ;) I’m not entirely sure what happened to him before, but he seems to have been abandoned, maybe because he was all alone or his mum disappeared, I don't know. I hope things start moving soon; the vet nurse told me to give him a massage and if that doesn’t work, to pop back in and see them this afternoon. I’ll definitely go just to be sure he’s alright, as I’m the anxious type when it comes to my cats and their health. Yes, we’re keeping him! He’s a little cutie, black and white, and I finally picked a name this morning: Ouistiti!

Well done for taking him in! This kitten has probably only ever lived outdoors, so he’s bound to be riddled with worms. As for him doing a poo, that’ll come in time once his system has settled back down. Are you going to keep him? :)

Thanks Clémence for your reply, that’s really put my mind at rest. He’s so tiny! He seems so fragile to me. I called up earlier and the vet nurse told me to massage his lower tummy to help him go to the toilet. I’ve given it a go but nothing’s happened so far. He’s eating well though and is starting to play a bit (since yesterday he’s been sleeping a lot, he’s very scared and cries a bit at times but not too much, I think he’s a brave little soldier!) She also told me to bring him back in if he still hasn't managed to do a poo.

Hi there, You're right, a bloated belly in kittens is often down to worms. Give it a week or so to see how things develop, but it shouldn't be anything too worrying. If you have any doubts at all, don't hesitate to give your vet another ring. As for him not pooing, that shouldn't be an emergency just yet either. Using liquid paraffin is a good idea. If the situation carries on for another week, definitely ask your vet for some advice. Clémence
