Kitten with a bloated tummy

Hi everyone,

Yesterday morning, while out on a Sunday walk with my husband, we found a tiny little kitten crying by the side of a path.

After catching it, we brought it home. I gave it a wash in the sink (its paws were filthy) and noticed it has fleas and its tummy is bloated.

I've kept it in the bathroom (since I have other cats and didn't want them getting fleas) tucked up warm in a little box.

It wouldn't eat anything all day, so I called the out-of-hours vet and managed to take it in last night.

The vet examined it, weighed it, and checked its temperature and blood sugar. She then managed to get it to eat a bit of that 'a/d' wet food or something similar.

Weight-wise: it's about 1.5 lbs (704g), estimated age: 6 weeks, temperature and blood sugar were both fine.

She gave me some worming treatment, which I gave it last night around 7 pm after getting back from the vet's.

I offered it some more wet food which it ate; it even went back to the bowl for more on its own. It's used the litter tray for a wee twice, once yesterday and once this morning.

However, no poo yet (so this morning I put a bit of liquid paraffin in its wet food – one of my other cats gets constipated, so I use it sometimes), and this morning its little belly is still swollen. I was searching online during the night and saw that FIP can also cause a bloated tummy. The vet told me its general condition was good and that it's probably just worms, but I'm panicking now I've seen the info about FIP...

How long do you think it takes for the wormer to work? And for the swelling to go down?

Thanks for your help.

Oh, and he doesn't purr, is that normal? All my other cats purred like aeroplane engines when they were kittens, so I find it really strange that he doesn't purr at all.

Hi everyone, I’ve got a question about Ouistiti. He’s currently in quarantine in my bathroom because of fleas, and I can't give him any treatment until he reaches 2.2 lbs. The vet mentioned some kind of spray, but they’d run out of stock. My worry is how to make sure he stays well-adjusted, as he's so tiny and only has me for company at the moment (eventually my other cats will be there for him too). - When he plays, he starts attacking my hands – what should I do? Should I shout "ouch" like you do with puppies? - When he cries, should I go to him straight away? Or let him cry for a bit? (I’ve been rushing in so far). I play with him and give him plenty of fuss—about every hour and a half, I spend about half an hour with him. As for cuddles, he’s a bit of a tough nut; he doesn't really want to stay in my arms, so I don't force it. Otherwise, he gives me little head-butts against my hands (when he’s not having one of his "moments" lol). He’s got more and more energy lately. He did a good poo this morning with some very long worms in it; he’s eating loads and tucks himself up in his box to sleep.

Yes, he’s done a poo and no sign of diarrhoea :) it’s a relief! Plus he’s starting to be less timid and is actually looking for some fuss; he gave me a few little head-butts earlier. He’s a boy, @Julie-cocker. I’ve decided to call him Ouistiti, though I’m sure it’ll just be Titi before long :)

So cute! Wishing Ouistiti a long and happy life :)

Do you know if it's a boy or a girl? Does the little one have a name?

Hi, I’m not a vet, so this might not be much comfort, but at that age, if he had FIP, I don't think he’d be playing at all. He wouldn’t be eating much and, honestly, I think he’d be looking quite poorly. On another note, I’m curious—just like Kirikiri, is there any chance you could share a little photo of him? :) Well done to you, anyway!
