Infected scar after spay – female cat

Hi everyone, I had my girl spayed last Friday, so it's been 8 days now. Because of the lockdown, I had to find a new vet to do the operation. He put a dressing on her and used dissolvable stitches, so we don't have a follow-up appointment scheduled. The dressing was really stubborn and it drove my little one mad; she kept pouncing on it and licking the whole thing, which meant it was rubbing against the wound. She managed to start licking the wound itself pretty quickly, but she was being gentle and wasn't pulling at the stitches. However, as soon as I could see through the dressing after two days, I thought the scar looked very open and quite large. It didn't look great, but I told myself I should wait a bit. The dressing was supposed to fall off after three days, but after 8 days there are still little bits stuck to her. I managed to get the main part of the bandage off with some scissors. The problem is that for the last 4 days, she's been licking and licking her wound, and I think it's infected. The skin looks red and there might even be some pus. There's now a lump under the scar (it doesn't look like a hernia as it's perfectly round). I've been putting Betadine on the wound for a few days (it worked well for my other cat's injuries). It's hard to tell if she's feeling okay, but she's eating, drinking, playing and sleeping. All seems pretty normal. The only unusual behaviour I've noticed is that she sometimes has spasms or shivers (she's only done this since the surgery) just before falling asleep. The vet operated on my 8-month-old kitten while she was in full heat. I've read that the shivering could be down to that. Now I just don't know what to do. A cone is impossible for my little one, so I’ve made her a little recovery suit out of a cut-up scarf. I'm still doubting how effective it is, though. With the lockdown, getting an appointment is complicated. I'll call the vet on Monday. In the meantime, do you have any advice, and specifically, what do you think of this scar? I've attached some photos (her fur has grown back a bit, she’s a long-haired cat). For info, I live in a flat and she's an indoor cat. Thanks in advance!

Evening, A lot of female cats experience some temporary swelling while they're healing, which can last for a few weeks. If there aren't any signs of pain or infection, it's usually nothing to worry about. But just to be on the safe side, you could always send the photo over to your vet.

My little Lady, after having the same op and especially since finishing her meds, has started to get some swelling in the area this morning. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, but is this serious and/or common after a spay once the course of antibiotics has finished?

Hi everyone, my little Lady has also just been spayed. She finished her course of meds the night before last, but this morning I noticed a bit of a swelling has appeared. She doesn't seem to be in any pain and it doesn't look infected – what do you guys think?

    Hi there

It’s not infected, just a bit irritated because she’s been licking at it.

In theory, the stitches should just disappear on their own since they're dissolvable ones.

I’ve got a little kitty at home who had her op on Friday morning; her dressing is still in place, otherwise I would’ve had a look at the scar.

There’s only one knotted stitch left, the others have already come away.

    Nothing to worry about, really.

Vets know how to handle spaying and they’re well aware that female cats won't stop fussing over their handiwork, so they make sure the stitching is nice and secure. 😁

Hi there, It's actually quite common for internal muscle stitches to cause a bit of a local inflammatory reaction, which often results in a hard lump appearing under the skin. It’s usually nothing to worry about in itself, unless the area starts looking particularly nasty. My old vet once gave an anti-inflammatory jab for this, but he was a bit needle-happy; it was more to give us peace of mind than anything else. The fact that it's red doesn't really worry me too much either, but you should obviously keep a close eye on it and see what your vet has to say.

I don’t see anything alarming either, but she’s certainly got quite a scar there. It must have been an old-school vet who did that; my last kitty only had a 1 cm scar on her flank. The vet used a spay hook to catch the second ovary—that’s the newer method so they don’t end up with these massive scars. As @Kalou said, use some antiseptic, and if you see her looking really lethargic or withdrawn, get her straight to the vet. But for now, everything looks more or less normal.

    Thanks for your reply,

I’m going to wait a bit, give the vet a call and see how it goes 😋

Hi, I’ve only ever had male cats, so I can’t really help you much with the scar itself. However, if there was an infection, there’s a good chance your cat wouldn't be her usual self; she probably wouldn't be eating much and would be sleeping a lot more than normal. If she’s still bright and alert, that seems like a good sign to me. Others might be better placed to advise you than I am, but I don’t see anything alarming here—certainly nothing that looks like an emergency.
