Hi everyone

I need some advice!! I've just adopted an 8-week-old kitten and I've just noticed he's riddled with fleas! On top of that, he's got loads of eggs around his neck, legs and tail...

I've heard that products like Frontline can be harmful for kittens. What can I do, please? And how do I get rid of all these eggs?

Thanks in advance

If Frontline Combo isn't doing the trick, try "Vectra Felis" spot-on; it’s both a preventative and a treatment. One application lasts for a month. You’ll need to order it from the chemist, as you won’t find it in the shops. It’s prescription-only, but if you’re on good terms with your pharmacist, they’ll order it for you, just like mine does. Personally, I’ve found it works brilliantly for my three cats.

I’d recommend going to see your vet; they’ll be able to give you some good advice. As for the fleas, you should know that about 95% of them live in your home, and only 5% are actually on your pet. I use Frontline Combo on my girls and they’ve never had fleas. Mind you, I’m not sure if it’s actually good for their health...

Hi, there's a really wide range of flea treatments available (including Frontline), and the minimum age and weight requirements vary from one product to the next. The best thing to do is take your cat to the vet, as some flea treatments are prescription-only and they need to examine the cat before they can dispense them. Otherwise, Frontline spray is a decent option—just make sure you weigh your kitten accurately and stick to the correct dose for their weight.

I've rubbed him with some mint from the garden and put a bit of white vinegar on the back of his neck where he can't lick it. I also gave him a brush to get some of the eggs out; I'll see tomorrow about buying some Frontline to see if that works...

As I'm not sure how you'd go about applying the vinegar, and cats generally aren't fans of it anyway, why not try the mint method instead? It's a safer bet...

Well, I’d also recommend Angeline56, Lilou Striga and Anima, but you’d be best off treating your kitten for fleas as well.

Mint should normally keep fleas at bay and stop them from laying eggs on your cat...

To apply it, just rub some mint leaves between your palms and stroke your cat – it’s really effective.

Thanks Minou63, I’ll give the vinegar a try. Cheers nini34, I’ve been looking online and saw that some cats have died from Frontline or had skin issues... I’m going to head to the pet shop tomorrow. And what should I do about the eggs?

Hi, I think Frontline has a spray range that you can use from one month old.

When I was younger, I heard that vinegar or mint could deter fleas...

If that's not specific enough (and I'm sure it's not), ask Anima, Lilou Striga or Angéline56. They’ll help you out; they’re really lovely and proper pros!
