Hair loss under the chin and a bit of dribbling... could a change in diet be the cause?

Hi everyone,

I've noticed over the last few weeks that our kitten has a small bald patch on her chin (which she didn't have before, as far as I can tell). She's seen the vet since then for fleas at the start of the month, but he didn't notice anything and we weren't worried at the time; we didn't mention it either as it was barely visible.

Except for about a week now, I've been wondering if it's spreading a bit towards the corners of her mouth. She doesn't seem to be in pain, and I don't think it's swollen. She’s eating, drinking, using her litter tray and playing as usual. I feel like she’s dribbling a bit when she’s happy during a cuddle session: she dribbles on me whereas she didn’t before, I think (just a few drops).

Hair loss under the chin and a bit of dribbling... could a change in diet be the cause?

We changed her diet a little under a month ago. I can't quite tell if the timing matches up, but I'm pretty sure she didn't have this problem before.

We’re giving her Feringa wet food and Purizon (she’s still on a 50/50 transition with Royal Canin because we had a full bag left over). Do you think it could be a reaction to the dry food or the wet food?

We’re going to the vet on Monday for a vaccination, but I’d love to get some opinions before then, thanks! :)

The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that the Purizon really is the problem. Can I just stop this dry food cold turkey and only give Royal Canin? Or should I just stick to wet food until I’ve had the vet’s advice? (I’m at home during the day this week, so I can manage feeding small portions of wet food throughout the day). I’m not seeing the vet until Thursday evening. :(

Even then, I still feel like I’ve let it drag on for too long. :S As for wet food, it took me a while to figure out that she loves the turkey ones but can’t stand the veal/whatever the other one was. I wanted to find some decent alternatives for a bit of variety, but when I saw the extortionate prices for Cosma and Almo, it really put me off. If it really is Purizon, then I need to find some good dry food in the same price range. I’m starting to think Purizon actually is the issue, as I reckon the hair loss has got worse since I went 50/50 during the transition.

So, Royal Canin does indeed list "poultry protein", but I don’t know which poultry specifically. It’s such a shame, she loves Purizon... Luckily I only bought a small bag as it was a trial offer with Feringa. Mind you, she’s still only on a 50/50 mix of Purizon and Royal Canin. I really hope it isn’t the Feringa, though, because I’ve just stocked up with 24 tins. ^^ What a headache! To think I switched for her own good and now I might have caused her some issues. :(

It does seem to more or less coincide with the changes to her diet... So, would it be the Purizon or the Feringa that’s to "blame"? She’s been on Royal Canin since she was a tiny kitten (that’s what she was on before we got her, and we’ve stuck with it since she came to us).

Feringa is grain-free, turkey variety (Turkey, pumpkin, catnip: 72% turkey hearts, turkey meat, turkey liver, turkey necks; 25.9% broth, 1% pumpkin, 1% minerals, 0.1% catnip).

Purizon kitten: 30% fresh chicken (boneless), 28% dried chicken, 10% potato, 4% chicken fat, 1% dried egg, 1% fresh boneless herring, 1% dried herring, fish oil (100% herring oil), hydrolysed animal protein, pea fibre, dried carrots, dried alfalfa, inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides, mannan-oligosaccharides, 0.5% dried pomegranate, dried apple, dried spinach, 0.3% psyllium, dried blackcurrant, dried sweet orange, dried blueberries, sodium chloride, dried brewer’s yeast, 0.2% turmeric root, glucosamine, 0.09% chondroitin sulphate, marigold extract.

I think chicken can be a common allergen, right? Is turkey the same?

Actually, I think she’s got a sort of blackhead, or maybe even two. No red gums, though. I wonder what the vet will say, considering they were the one who recommended Royal Canin and we’re the ones who switched her dry food and added wet food to her diet.

It’s spreading to her top lip now. :(

Thanks for the reply, I feel much less alone now!
