Hair loss under the chin and a bit of dribbling... could a change in diet be the cause?

Hi everyone,

I've noticed over the last few weeks that our kitten has a small bald patch on her chin (which she didn't have before, as far as I can tell). She's seen the vet since then for fleas at the start of the month, but he didn't notice anything and we weren't worried at the time; we didn't mention it either as it was barely visible.

Except for about a week now, I've been wondering if it's spreading a bit towards the corners of her mouth. She doesn't seem to be in pain, and I don't think it's swollen. She’s eating, drinking, using her litter tray and playing as usual. I feel like she’s dribbling a bit when she’s happy during a cuddle session: she dribbles on me whereas she didn’t before, I think (just a few drops).

Hair loss under the chin and a bit of dribbling... could a change in diet be the cause?

We changed her diet a little under a month ago. I can't quite tell if the timing matches up, but I'm pretty sure she didn't have this problem before.

We’re giving her Feringa wet food and Purizon (she’s still on a 50/50 transition with Royal Canin because we had a full bag left over). Do you think it could be a reaction to the dry food or the wet food?

We’re going to the vet on Monday for a vaccination, but I’d love to get some opinions before then, thanks! :)

Evening, I’ve taken in a sick little kitten who had keratitis and ear mites. More surprises today: I’ve noticed that around his dewclaw, it’s looking inflamed and hairless, plus he’s got a bit of hair loss under his mouth. Any ideas what it could be?

He hasn’t got the little black dots, but he has the same hair loss on his muzzle.

Did it grow back after the treatment for the herpes?

    Thanks

Hi there! I came across your posts after a quick Google search for a similar issue we're having with our kitten. Did you ever manage to find out what was causing the problem or find a treatment? We're really worried. Thanks in advance for getting back to me, Clovis

I asked the vet if I could do that, but he explicitly said no. :( My partner is handling it now and it’s going better, even though she spits it out a few times before finally swallowing it. I get far too stressed and I think she picks up on it, so she starts struggling. Thanks for your help anyway! :)

    Thanks! :)

It was a total nightmare trying to give her her half a tablet last night. Mind you, she even managed to bite the vet when he was giving her her jab, and he’s supposed to be used to it! She’s being quite a handful at the moment. -__-

Just back from the vet: it’s got nothing to do with her diet, she’s actually caught herpes. He told me it’s common at this age and is caused by a virus. Just a bit of bad luck, really. :(

At least it’s not painful and she’s got a course of tablets to take.

So, it’s back to the Purizon dry food she loves! :)

Ever since she started on Feringa wet food, her coat has been much less dry and is a lot shinier (it looks much better, basically). Could it be that this wet food is making her skin too oily as a trade-off, and causing blackheads?

Today I finally managed to have a proper look and even take a photo. There are definitely big black spots and they're still spreading. She’s been off the Purizon since yesterday, though. :(

I’m not actually sure if it’s acne, because since it’s on her underside, you have to wait until she’s sleeping on her back with her belly up to even notice it. That’s why it took us so long to realise... When she’s standing up facing us, you can’t see anything, or very little at least.

So, I’m switching to giving her plenty of wet food in small portions throughout the day, with some RC dry food as a supplement at night, until Thursday. We’ll see what the vet thinks. I just hope they don't tell me I should have just stuck with the RC dry food and nothing else!
