Double canines in my kitten

Hi everyone,

I've just realised that my 5-month-old kitten has double canines. I've been looking it up online and found some conflicting advice. I'm going to get in touch with my vet, of course, but has anyone else seen this before?

Thanks for your replies!

Sorry if I'm being a bit of a stickler, Euqinorev... But I’d better watch my spelling now, I have a feeling you'll be keeping a close eye on me! ;)

Yes, it's the adult tooth coming through even though the baby canine hasn't fallen out yet.

But Euqi, you're right!! Sparrow has 6 adult canines. He has his 4 normal ones and then two little points at the bottom in front of the canines. The vet's had a look and they're definitely new canines that have grown in; as long as it's not bothering him, we'll leave them be, but if it does start to bother him, we'll have to operate.

My dog also had two teeth in the same spot because the milk tooth was taking its time falling out while the adult tooth was coming through. You should notice a difference in colour between the two teeth as the milk tooth shouldn't have a blood supply anymore. But if the milk tooth doesn't fall out in a few days, go and see a vet; they’ll pull it out as it can interfere with the way the adult tooth grows. For Euqinorev, poly = many and dactyl = toes.

Or maybe it’s like polydactyly – ‘canine-dactyly’? Just a random thought, but my Gatsby has his two upper canines poking out over his lip even when his mouth is shut. I’d never seen anything like it before (and I love it, it’s so cute – he’s my little vampire ;)) )

Maybe she’s just losing her milk teeth and the adult tooth has already started coming through. If I’m not mistaken, the canines are the last ones to fall out.
