Hi, I was wondering if your cat's bottom is always clean? Because for my cat, it's rarely the case and I don't know what to do. He's always got bits of dried poo around his bum (how glamorous). I'm pregnant and not immune to toxo, so I'm starting to freak out a bit now...

Thanks for your help.

Evening, I’ve got the same problem. Plus, my cat is overweight and she keeps eating the dogs' dry food. What should I do? Thanks for your help! I should also mention she often has diarrhoea...

    Hi there,

Cats are naturally very clean animals and usually take great care of their own grooming. Because of this, it’s quite unusual for a cat to have a dirty bottom.

First of all, it’s worth looking at the consistency of their stools. Do they have diarrhoea? If so, how long has this been happening? Have you noticed anything out of the ordinary in their poo (such as fibres, lumps, blood, etc.)? If you have, I’d recommend getting them checked out by a vet fairly soon.

It’s also worth double-checking their litter tray to see if it’s clean enough. If it’s looking a bit soiled, you might need to scoop it more often or perhaps even try switching to a different type of cat litter.

    All the best,
    Manon

Hi there, Some cats are just more fastidious than others, let’s put it that way... A bit of leftover poo around the bum is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. My Oriental, who spends half her life grooming herself, seems to think her bottom isn't part of the routine! A baby wipe will do the trick—just move fast, as cats hate having their bums touched.

Sorry, I missed your reply. No, she isn't overweight, I think she's a normal weight... the vet has never mentioned anything to me about it. Thanks for getting back to me anyway! :)

My girl’s bum is always a bit dirty, maybe she’s just not grooming herself properly, as I don’t see her cleaning her back end (both her bum and her bits) very often. Even so, her poos have always been normal. I clean her bum gently using gloves and a bit of cotton wool with some lukewarm or cool water. She’s not a huge fan, but she’s got a very gentle nature so she puts up with it... You don’t necessarily need to clean it that often, as long as there’s no irritation... If you’re pregnant, it just means you have to be even more careful about washing your hands and perhaps avoid stroking your cat too much. You could potentially make your bedroom off-limits during the pregnancy, and it’s worth asking your vet for their advice on hygiene. Is your cat overweight?

Thanks so much, no, his poo is pretty normal, nothing to report there... and I buy him good quality dry food anyway...

At the moment it’s really just a few little traces of dry poo, to be honest... 🙁

And with mine, unless they've got diarrhoea, their bottom is always clean...

It might depend on the consistency of his poo... maybe a bit on the soft side? Have you checked? Some cats just aren't as tidy as others; usually, they’d groom themselves to stay clean...

If you’re worried, you could always wear gloves to give him a clean – though I’m not sure he’ll be a fan! And for cleaning out his litter tray too...
