Cats and peanuts

Hi, I've got a quick question. My cat stole a roasted peanut. I took it away from him straight away. The next day he did it again, so since he was having so much fun with it, I rinsed one under the tap to get the salt off and let him play with it. It stops him from nicking any more since he's happy with his own one.

But I've only just thought about it now – is it dangerous for him if he eats 1 or 2 a day? I know there are some toxic foods that you have to avoid at all costs, but are roasted peanuts one of those things? I mean, I know salt is obviously a big no-no, but once it's been rinsed, can I still give him 1 or 2 every now and then?

Thanks.

This food isn't listed by the RSPCA as being harmful to cats.

Just a little matter of perspective; It wouldn't cross our minds to tuck into a raw mouse for a snack, yet... the fact that peanuts are allergenic to humans doesn't seem significant at all to me. Just saying.

Right, well the vet doesn't see any risk apart from the salt, obviously, so she isn't against it as long as it’s limited to one or two a day at most.

I'm still going to hide them, just to be on the safe side. :)

@Auli75, yes he gets a little treat every now and then, it's just that this time he spotted these peanuts (we don't usually have any) and thought they were a bit of fun. :)

I think you have to be careful because of allergens ^^..... First it was pepper, now it's peanuts...... Your cat is quite a character xD

When I say he's lovely, handsome and sweet but completely bonkers, nobody believes me. 😁

Hi, Maybe those little ball-shaped treats would be a good alternative? I picked some up from my vet for a really reasonable price, I thought, and they’re completely safe. Also, at the risk of getting some stick, personally I think the simplest thing is that my cat isn't allowed to steal anything and she knows it – plus, I always put everything away if I’m not there to keep an eye on things.

Personally, I’d be more worried that he might swallow it while playing and choke, just like with kids. I don’t think it’s a good idea to let him have it.

    Hi!

I also tend to call the vet at the drop of a hat, but it just shows we care about our fur babies' well-being and want what’s best for them, doesn't it? I reckon vets prefer that over people who couldn't care less and only take their pets in once in a blue moon. Anyway...

Personally, I’d avoid giving peanuts to my cat... especially given all the allergy issues people have with them already.

Since it happened a few days ago now, have you noticed any "issues" with your cat? When a cat eats something that's bad for them, the symptoms are usually the same: vomiting, lethargy, refusing to eat or drink, or not using the litter tray as usual. I’m no vet, but if @Howtocat’s friend didn’t have any trouble with this "issue" with her cat and you haven't seen any problems on your end, I think it’ll be fine :) Especially since if they ingest something "forbidden", the symptoms usually show up within a few hours anyway.

You can always give your vet a ring just to find out if it's okay to give this to your cat every now and then, just for peace of mind. You’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief and then you’ll know for sure.

Yeah, fair point, I could always pester the vet. I’ll see if I get any more replies by Monday, but if your friend is giving it to theirs without any trouble, I don't think I've got much to worry about. :) My vet is really lovely, so I must admit I feel a bit bad bothering her for something so minor. But yeah, worst case, a little white lie so I don't look like a total nutter; it’s not great, but it won’t do any harm. 😁 Thanks! :)
