Can several cats share the same litter tray? If so, what is the maximum number?
Thanks for your help

Hi, I’ve got a question. I know two cats can share a litter tray, but can a kitten share one with an older cat (5 years old)? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Hi there, the number of litter trays in a home should be the number of cats plus one. It’s not a problem if they share them as long as they are cleaned out daily (urine and poo scooped out every day) and you make sure to keep their flea and worming treatments up to date.
Hi everyone,
I’ve got 8 cats and currently have one small litter tray and a large plastic tub that I use as a tray. I clean the small one twice a day and the big one five times a day. Is this enough, or should I be getting more trays?
Hi everyone,
We have two female cats at home, but it’s a real battle over the litter trays. Our first cat has started peeing everywhere since the second one arrived, even though we have two litter trays. We’ve tried using pheromone diffusers, but nothing seems to be working. We’re at our wits' end, so any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! 👍
All three of my girls use the same litter tray. I scoop out the poop every day and change the litter twice a week. They also go outside, so they can do their business outdoors too.
Hi,
My two cats share the same litter tray without any problems (it’s a large tray, though), but I reckon once you have three cats, you really need to have two trays 😁
Hi,
My two cats use the same litter tray. It's not a problem at all. Mind you, we have to clean it out quite often because I don't know if you knew, but cats go to the loo a lot 😉 and it's also for hygiene. Anyway, I wouldn't know where we'd even put a second tray, so as long as you keep on top of it, then yes, your cats can share a tray.
2 cats = 1 tray 😁
So I think if you've got 4 cats, you can have a minimum (and I mean a bare minimum) of 2 trays....
For my two cats, I have two litter trays. Even though they both use both of them, I think it’s still better to have one tray per cat; for example, mine use one for urinating and the other for doing their business.
Apart from the hygiene aspect, sharing one tray can cause territorial issues.
