Adult cat licking then violently biting kitten

Hi there,

I'm writing because we've just adopted a 2-month-old kitten to join our first cat, who is a year old.

They are both males, and the older one has been neutered.

We originally planned to keep them separate for a few days before doing the introductions. However, since the older one knows how to open doors, everything was fast-tracked and they ended up meeting face-to-face just a few hours after the kitten arrived.

The kitten was scared of the big one at first, but that wore off in a matter of minutes. So, we decided to let them spend time together.

For the first two days, everything was fine, aside from the older cat putting the little one in his place a few times (like "don't bite my tail while I'm asleep"). We even caught them sharing the same food bowl and playing together a bit.

Since yesterday, though, we've noticed the big one 'violently' licking the little one two or three times. This grooming is very quickly followed by bites, first to the neck and then on the back. The bites seem quite hard; they made the kitten meow at first, and because the older cat was so persistent, the kitten ended up hissing and even swatting at him. It's worth noting that the older cat seems to want to pin the kitten down while licking him.

In your opinion, what's causing this behaviour? And what should we do?

Thanks for your help.

I agree with the points made above.

As long as no blood is drawn, there's nothing to worry about. And as long as the kitten isn't running away from your cat or showing signs of fear, it's all perfectly normal.

I can't imagine a neutered adult cat getting into a proper scrap with a kitten; they're aware it’s just a baby and that they’ve got nothing to fear from it.

Hi there, Your big guy is certainly a bit rough, but I think he’s just trying to assert his dominance rather than actually trying to hurt the little one. Especially since they’re both males—even though the older one is neutered, he’ll still be very territorial. Also, contrary to the so-called ‘golden rule’ that says you should never intervene, I reckon that when the big one goes too far, you can give a loud ‘NO!’ and a sharp clap of your hands. This is just to break up the rough play without actually using the older cat’s name. On the flip side, make sure to give him loads of praise and fuss when he’s being gentle with the kitten. When it’s the little one pestering the big one, let the older one put him in his place, even if it looks a bit heavy-handed. A mother cat won't think twice about giving her kittens a proper wallop if they’re bothering her, and it won't do them any harm.

Oh, right, it’s only a small point and I hate being the spelling police, but ‘he bites’ is spelled with a ‘d’... I’m not trying to be a pain in the ****, but when I saw your thread title I actually read ‘violent kitten death’... which gave me a bit of a shock, but I don't think I'll be needing a shrink just yet! 😁

I also think it’s a bit of a dominance thing! The big one is taking advantage of the kitten’s size to throw his weight around, but it’ll all level out soon enough. If the kitten isn’t scared of the big guy, it’s usually a sign that he’s the one actually calling the shots!

Thanks for your reply. What’s even more worrying is that the big one goes up to the little one while he’s sleeping and starts licking him, then bites him quite hard.
