2-month-old kitten fall

Hi everyone, my 2-month-old kitten fell from the first floor; one second of not paying attention and bang. She’s a proper little daredevil.

When I picked her up, she wasn't moving at all, which I think was due to shock. When we got back upstairs, I noticed some blood on her nose; she was breathing really heavily, drooling, and her eyes were watering. I wrapped her up in a duvet to keep her warm as she seemed quite dazed. There were only a few drops of blood (I think it’s just a small cut right by her nose). I used a damp flannel to cool her down. She seemed to have some discomfort around her nose, there was some fluid coming out and she was sneezing. I called an out-of-hours vet but they were going to charge me around £170 just for the consultation, which I simply can't afford. I stayed up with her all night; she slept and sneezed a few times to try and clear that "discomfort". I eventually drifted off, and when I woke up, she was running around the living room like a mad thing. She’s eaten well, her stools are normal, and while she’s still sneezing a bit, there’s no more fluid coming out. I’ve had to go to work, but I've got a vet appointment booked for 6pm this evening.

I’m so, so scared. Does anyone have any similar experiences to share? From what I’ve described, does it sound serious? I feel so guilty about it.

Thanks everyone.

It's great to hear from you, and even better that it's such good news! I can't really help with the balcony though; I've only ever lived in ground-floor flats or houses... But I’m sure someone here will be able to help you. You should post a specific thread about "securing a balcony" – you'll probably have more luck that way. Have a lovely evening.

First of all, thank you everyone for your messages :)

Well, everything is fine now, it was more of a scare than anything else. She’s just got a little scratch on her snout; she was very lucky. A massive fright for her and for me too. Phew!

She fell from the balcony, not a window. The balcony is actually secured, and my one-year-old cat has never tried to get over to the other side before. The little monkey found a way to get out there without me seeing.

We’re going to reinforce the security even more; in the meantime, she’s banned from the balcony.

Do you have any ideas on what I could put in place to stop her climbing or getting over to the other side? (websites, shops, etc.)

Thanks. Give all your furry friends a stroke from me.

Hi there, I really hope he had enough time to right himself and land on his feet! Only the vet will be able to tell if there’s any internal damage or not. They might want to do an X-ray or even an ultrasound to check everything. Sometimes symptoms don't show up until a few days later, so you'll need to keep a close eye on him. A word of advice: make sure to cat-proof that window as soon as possible. Hang in there! Please keep us posted, thank you!

Poor kitten... just because there isn't much blood (if any at all) doesn't mean she isn't in pain. Internal injuries are sometimes more serious than external ones. The vet will probably do some X-rays to check if anything is broken. When you found her, was she on all four paws?

Yes, when I looked over the balcony she was on all fours, and by the time I got downstairs she was sitting right in front of the front door.

I'm scared, we'll see this evening. What's reassuring me is that she's been playing, eating, etc. If she were really poorly, she wouldn't be eating, would she?

It’s hard to put your mind at rest before tonight, Alexia... He’s too small to properly cushion a fall from one storey up. It’s possible he hit his head on the ground. Only the vet will be able to tell you how things are this evening. You can always ask about paying in instalments if they want to run extra tests on top of the consultation fee.
