2-month-old kitten fall

Hi everyone, my 2-month-old kitten fell from the first floor; one second of not paying attention and bang. She’s a proper little daredevil.

When I picked her up, she wasn't moving at all, which I think was due to shock. When we got back upstairs, I noticed some blood on her nose; she was breathing really heavily, drooling, and her eyes were watering. I wrapped her up in a duvet to keep her warm as she seemed quite dazed. There were only a few drops of blood (I think it’s just a small cut right by her nose). I used a damp flannel to cool her down. She seemed to have some discomfort around her nose, there was some fluid coming out and she was sneezing. I called an out-of-hours vet but they were going to charge me around £170 just for the consultation, which I simply can't afford. I stayed up with her all night; she slept and sneezed a few times to try and clear that "discomfort". I eventually drifted off, and when I woke up, she was running around the living room like a mad thing. She’s eaten well, her stools are normal, and while she’s still sneezing a bit, there’s no more fluid coming out. I’ve had to go to work, but I've got a vet appointment booked for 6pm this evening.

I’m so, so scared. Does anyone have any similar experiences to share? From what I’ve described, does it sound serious? I feel so guilty about it.

Thanks everyone.

Your kitten was taken away from his mum and littermates too soon, so he hasn’t had the chance to learn proper feline social cues.

Your older girl is simply teaching him the ropes. It might seem a bit rough, but that’s just the feline way of showing the little ones how to respect boundaries.

As long as the kitten isn’t being seriously scratched or bitten (actual bleeding wounds), there’s really no need to worry.

Friendly P.S. – a bit of extra care with your spelling would make your posts much easier to follow! 😉

Hi @del2244, thanks for your reply. This morning she’s stopped sneezing, she seems less swollen and she’s playing. She’s eaten and has been to the litter tray, so she seems to be doing alright. It’s a relief as I’m heading out to do the shopping this afternoon, so I hope she’ll be okay. By the way, do you have any advice? I have another female cat who is a year old and she’s been spayed. I’ve had my little kitten for three weeks now; they play together a bit, but the older one gives her some quite nasty swipes.

Actually, it’s just your own posts you’re being notified about 😉 Keep a close eye on your little one, and at the slightest sign of pain or unusual behaviour, head straight to the vet... preferably not the one who thinks a fall like that is nothing to worry about 😒 Speak soon

I’ve called the out-of-hours vet and he told me it was normal and that there’s nothing to worry about, but I’m still freaking out.

Hi, my 2-month-old kitten has just fallen from the stairs. She didn’t tumble all the way down but fell straight to the floor from a height of about 8 feet (2.5m). Her eyes are watering, her nose is swollen and she’s sneezing a lot. Please help me, I’m so scared.

Yes, you’ve been lucky there, because looking at the symptoms described, I’d have put money on it being a cleft palate (manageable, but it can require surgery). The symptoms (drooling and struggling to breathe) were due to shock; according to the vet, the poor thing was just terrified. If it had been a cleft palate, oh goodness, I’d have been in a right state. She’s a tough little thing.
