Wormer and antibiotics

Hi there,

This morning my cat had an anti-inflammatory; he's on one dose a day for 3 days.

He's also due to have a worming treatment tonight.

But the vet just gave me some antibiotics a few minutes ago as a precaution – half a tablet a day for 7 days.

He's just had the antibiotic with his dry food; can he still have his worming tablet? Or should there be a gap between them?

Right, so I’m sticking to the plan from the first check-up this morning, which is once-a-day anti-inflammatories until Monday. I went back to the emergency vet earlier, who had been in touch with my regular vet... she’s prescribed antibiotics, half a tablet for up to 7 days. My own vet had said that she would have started him on antibiotics after the course of anti-inflammatories anyway. At least this way he's taking the antibiotics and the anti-inflammatories together, just in case there's an infection.

If I were you, I’d wait until the course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories is finished before giving the wormer. My vet recently advised the same thing for my cat when they had laryngitis; they were on antibiotics and needed a worming treatment, but I was told to wait until the first course was over. You can always give your vet a quick ring just to be sure, though.
