Urgent: Need advice on a weird-sounding injury

Hi everyone,

This is my first post (simply because I need some advice really quickly!), so I hope this is okay.

I don't usually worry too much about my cat's frequent scrapes and scratches, but today is different:

Filou was treated for poisoning last week. He's still been a bit weak, and today he came home covered in injuries. Nothing too alarming at first, but looking closer, he’s got a painful abscess between his ears, and while checking him over, I noticed his shoulder is very tender. I had a feel and it was awful!

When I touch his shoulder, it feels like there’s bubbly fluid under the skin, BUT IT ACTUALLY MAKES A SOUND! 😯 When I touch it, it sounds just like crinkling paper. It’s such a strange noise and really worrying. When I pinch the area, the fluid feels like it has 'lumps' in it... My parents aren't sure what to do. Should we take him to the vet? Have any of you ever come across an injury like this before?

Please let me know as soon as possible in case it’s something serious! ;)

Hi! I've just got back from the vet; my cat had the exact same thing. It turned out to be subcutaneous emphysema—basically pockets of gas under the skin caused by bacteria from a bite. Only a vet will be able to tell you for sure if that's what it is and get it sorted, but I'm just sharing this so some of you don't worry yourselves to death while waiting for your appointment like I did! ;)

Hi, the most likely cause is an abscess. If that is the case, the cat would need sedating, and you’d need sterile equipment to drain or lance it, followed by disinfection and a course of antibiotics... basically, it’s best to see the vet 😉

Hi, I’m having the same issue with my cat. It’s on the top of their head, right between the ears. Did you ever get an answer, and do you know what to do???
