Trapped paw

Hello,

My little two-and-a-half-month-old kitten got her paw caught in a door. (My dad opened a door, she put her paw in the way and he didn't see her). She screamed like I've never heard before... it was quite distressing.

She immediately ran off to hide behind the TV stand.

She came out after about 2 minutes. She's eaten. She is limping a little bit but not much; she can manage the stairs despite her tiny size and her sore paw, and she's climbed onto my bed. Just now, for about a minute, she was making little whimpering noises at times but it doesn't last long (she doesn't know how to meow yet). Do you think it's essential to go to the vet? Has this ever happened to you? Do you think it's serious?

Let us know how you get on once you've been.

It’s pretty clear that if it’s swollen, there’s definitely something wrong. I don't think it's broken, otherwise she’d be screaming the house down if you even touched it, but there could be a fracture or something else going on... Try to find a neighbour who can give you a lift, or someone like that. It would be a real shame if your cat ended up with lasting issues when it’s something that could be treated.

Does the vet know your parents? Mine agreed to see me without paying upfront, and my parents went in to settle the bill a week later. Give them a ring and ask if it’s possible to do it that way. If they say no, you can always ask for some advice, but it’s not right for the paw to be swollen...

Hi, if you think their leg looks a bit of a weird shape, it’s clear you need to take them to the vet. Don't you have any friends (or maybe friends of your parents) who live nearby? I reckon they might be able to help you out, because if it’s fractured and it heals badly on its own, they could end up with lifelong issues...

No, no one's here. My mum is away and my dad is in a meeting. I'll give them a ring, that's a good idea, thanks.

Is there no one who can give you a lift? Because honestly, when there’s a lump involved, it could be just about anything... If you really can’t find a way to get there, at least try giving the vet a ring. Explain that you definitely can’t make it until tomorrow and ask if there’s anything you can do on your end in the meantime to help or make them comfortable. At the very least, describe the situation as best you can to get their advice.

Karineg14: when I touch her she doesn't make a sound, but she has a lump on her leg. The problem is we can't take her tonight — she's too young to be taken on her own, my mum is away and my dad has a meeting this evening. I'll keep an eye on her tonight and see how she's doing, otherwise we'll take her to the vet on Friday evening.

Well, like I said, she let out a yelp at the time, which is normal, but she was walking fine afterwards and there was no sign she’d caught it.

But based on what you’re saying, you really need to take her to the vet. How does she react if you touch her paw? Even if it’s not broken, you should still take her in, if only to be sure what’s wrong so the vet can give her the right treatment.

You need to take them to the vet if you think their paw looks a bit strange.

Drey333: She isn’t limping anymore and she’s stopped meowing, but her paw is looking a bit strange. She stretches it out and it kind of zigzags (I’m not really sure how to describe it).

Karineg14: That’s a relief. But did Luna’s paw still look odd the next day as well? (It happened late last night.) Or did it go back to normal straight away, or almost straight away?
