My kitten is suckling on my dog

Hi everyone,

I've adopted a kitten who's about 3 months old. Ever since he arrived at the house, he's been suckling on my dog. At first, she used to let him get on with it, but now she's started growling at him and moves away when growling isn't enough. I think it might be hurting her now, but Titou (the kitten) always comes back to try and nurse again.

Should I pull him away when he does this or just let them be?

When Titou is too persistent, she eventually gives in. I'm worried that my dog (Bella) might end up with a problem because of this or that their relationship will turn sour.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My cat suckled from my dog for six months (six months!!!). He was very young, she was having a phantom pregnancy, and they were both perfectly happy with it! The vet told me: "You mustn't let them do that!" I tried separating them after trying the peppermint ointment and the anti-lactation cream he’d given me to put on her teats. The cat was wailing behind the door and the dog was crying on the other side... In the end, I just let Mother Nature take her course. They had a very strong bond for the six years my dog was alive... When she passed away, he really struggled to get over it; she was his adoptive mum... Just let him be, your kitten has found a wonderful source of love and warmth! Are you sure my dog won't have any problems because of this???

I’ve recently taken in a kitten and for about a week now he’s been suckling on my dog. How can I get him to stop? The area’s starting to look a bit red and sore. Thanks!

There's no choice, you have to put a stop to this behaviour, as it's going to end up hurting her.

(It's not easy to curb because the cat will keep coming back again and again, and the dog won't understand what she's done wrong; you'll need to keep them apart until the habit is broken.)

Hi, my 3-month-old kitten is suckling on my 10-month-old dog. Luna (the dog) lets her do it, but her nipples are turning red, so I’m getting a bit worried. What should I do? Thanks for your help.

    Hi everyone,

Just an update: Titou isn't nursing from my dog anymore. I took her to the vet about her teats, and she gave me a cream to apply to them. Things are much better now; they aren't swollen anymore, although they’re still a bit brown.

Thanks everyone for your advice! :)
