My kitten drank some water with a few drops of bleach in it

Hi everyone.

I have a kitten who is about 8 or 9 months old (I'm not sure of his exact age as he's a rescue) and I've got this bad habit where, when I put a mug in the sink, I add a drop or two of bleach to get rid of tea stains and the like. I didn't realise my kitten had jumped up into the sink and was drinking from the mug; he only had a tiny bit because I caught him straight away. I gave him some fresh water which he drank immediately afterwards. Could he get sick, or should I take him to the vet?

I hope that's clear. Thanks in advance for any help.

You should switch to liquid black soap—it’s brilliant for everything around the house and completely safe for pets!

Hi there and thanks for your reply. He only swallowed a few drops diluted in about half a pint of water. I gave him some fresh water straight away, which he drank. He seems fine since then; he ate his evening wet food without any trouble and has been getting up to his usual mischief. He’s fast asleep now. I won’t be using bleach for the mugs anymore—I’ve definitely learned my lesson. Thanks again for your response.

    Hi,

First of all, it really depends on the concentration of the bleach your cat has swallowed. If it was only a drop or two diluted in water, you can try to get them to drink plenty of water to help flush it out of their system as quickly as possible. Keep a very close eye on their general condition; if they seem at all unwell or if they start vomiting, don't hesitate to call an emergency vet straight away. If your cat has swallowed more bleach than that, I would also recommend calling your vet immediately.

Bleach can be very corrosive to the lining of a cat's digestive tract, so I would suggest changing the way you clean your mugs to avoid a more serious problem in the future.

    Best of luck,

Thank you for your reply. I’m relieved. He’s doing well. I’ve just given him his evening wet food and he ate normally after having a nap. He hasn’t been sick. I learnt from your reply that cats like the smell of bleach, which I didn't know. Thanks again. Have a good evening. 👋

Hi there, Cats absolutely love the smell of bleach. However, ingesting it can be very dangerous. If I were you, as long as the cat is eating, drinking, playing, isn't vomiting and is acting normally, I’d assume the amount swallowed was too small to do any harm. But please be very careful to ensure it can’t happen again.
