My cat’s tail is hurt!

I have a six-and-a-half-year-old female cat. When I got home today, I noticed her tail was looking a bit strange. She can lift it about halfway, but the rest of it, especially the tip, is just hanging limp and she can’t seem to move it at all. When I touched her tail, she cried out and hissed at me. She even snapped at my dog, and they usually get on really well together.

What should I do?

Will she definitely need an amputation?

Please help me, I’m worried sick!!

He's doing better, his tail is moving a bit more every day which shows that the blood flow is gradually returning.

Hi everyone, I know this thread is a bit old now, but I really need some advice. My cat is 6 years old and he loves going outdoors and climbing on anything and everything. Yesterday he came home soaking wet, as if he’d been stuck out in the rain. When I got in last night, he was on my bed and didn't want to move – he’s even hissing at us. We noticed he’s walking slowly and keeping his tail low. I took him to the vet this morning and apparently his tail isn’t broken; he’s clearly had a nasty knock at the base of it, so the blood isn't circulating properly all the way down. He’s still managing to get to his litter tray to do his business, even though it’s a struggle. The vet gave him a jab and I’ve got tablets to give him for six days. He had some food when we got back and then went to sleep. He’s staying in the lounge with us, but if I get too close he meows as if to say "leave me alone" – maybe he’s just in a huff after the vet trip. I can’t see any improvement with his tail yet, though. I know it’s not going to get better overnight, but I’m still really worried. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, I've just noticed that my cat meows whenever I touch his tail. It looks a bit swollen to me, and he isn't going outside anymore either. Should I take him to the vet?

I went to the vet this morning. It turns out another cat bit her tail, which is why she was in pain, but it’s nothing too serious! I have to keep her indoors over the weekend and she’s on antibiotics until Thursday. She had an anti-inflammatory jab this morning and she’s already doing much better!! I’m so relieved!

So, what’s the verdict then?? Is it fixable or not?

We're taking her to the vet tomorrow morning at 9 am... She isn't bleeding and hasn't got any wounds—well, she isn't really letting me check properly, but I haven't seen any. I was wondering if it could be treated just by keeping her still, for example. She already had a problem a few years ago where she’d torn the base of her tail; she had a bandage on for three weeks and it cleared up. I just hope the vet doesn't give me any bad news, I love her so much!

Emergency vet, this kitty must be in absolute agony. I’m not sure if they’ll go ahead with an amputation, though...
