My cat's eyes are constantly runny

Hi there,

As you can see in the photo, my cat's eyes are constantly watering. Sometimes the discharge is clear and other times it's brown.

I got him from a rescue centre when he was two months old; he was a feral kitten from the woods and had already suffered from cat flu.

Last winter he had another cat flu flare-up, so the vet put him on antibiotics and some eye ointment.

I regularly clean his eyes with saline solution. We've been together for over a year now and he still has this brown discharge. It doesn't seem to affect his quality of life, but I'd like to understand what it is to try and help him.

Thanks for any help

Hi @Didijude, My cat also suffers from cat flu. He often gets a runny right eye, and to help with that I add a few drops of grapefruit seed extract to his water for a few days. It's natural and helps to boost the immune system; it's best to go for an organic one if you can.

Hi @Didijude, we’re in the same boat with our domestic shorthair. We do just what you do and use saline; some days the watering isn’t as bad depending on what she’s up to, but it definitely gets worse when she’s been outside in the cold.

Evening, I’m having the same issue with my sister's kitten. Our vet told us it’s actually quite common and that they often don't grow out of it as they get older. There are some expensive treatments you can try, but they aren't necessarily very effective. Hope this helps anyway.

Hi there, It’s possible your cat has the same issue as my Miss, who has blocked tear ducts. If the discharge is turning brown, it’s usually just a bit of muck or dirt building up there. Still, it’s best to get it checked out by a vet just to be on the safe side. If that is the cause of the problem, our vet told us there isn't much you can do, which I also saw confirmed in an article online. It is possible to have them unblocked, but it’s not uncommon for them to block up again afterwards—and since it has to be done under general anaesthetic, it’s not exactly a minor procedure.
