Meowing before pooing

Hi everyone,

I'm starting a new thread about something that's really worrying me.

My 2-year-old cat, who I adopted 15 months ago, meows a lot before she poos. She's always done this since we got her. We've mentioned this issue to our vet several times, but she investigated the urinary tract (urine tests, blood work... everything was fine), changed our worming treatment, tried expressing the anal glands (which were completely empty, so no problems there), and sold us a laxative paste to give her because she only goes once a day (sometimes twice, like today, but that's rare) and always at roughly the same time.

Her stools are well-formed—not dry, not too big, and no diarrhoea. No visible worms or blood either. She drinks plenty of water. We worm her every three months.

The laxative paste and boiled courgettes haven't changed anything; she still only poos once a day. Mind you, all these tests are costing me a small fortune, and I find it odd that they're looking for a urinary disorder when my cat only meows when she's about to defecate... Maybe I should get a second opinion from another vet?

Her bottom looks a bit irritated and swollen sometimes. Are there any creams to soothe her after she's been, or to apply beforehand to help with the pain? To be honest, I'm not even sure if it is pain; I've heard that some cats just have this ritual of meowing before or after they go...

    I’ve thought about that, which is why I was asking if there was anything to help soothe her. At the same time, I don’t even dare take her temperature; it feels like such a violation. So I can’t really see myself giving her a suppository... Anyway, she’s doing fine now, so there's no need to pester her!

    She’s leaving her "offering" twice a day now and isn't meowing anymore. I think the forum post must have scared her—when she saw the word "Vaseline", she realised she’d better stop messing about.

    Free-feeding is working well; she never empties her bowl and just goes over for 3 or 4 bits of dry food every so often. She’s normally "allowed" 50g a day.

    Yesterday, she ate 70g, and today she’s at 50g so far but the day isn’t over yet. She’s actually being very sensible...

    Silly question: is it possible for a cat to get haemorrhoids?

    Actually, he meows to warn me he’s going for a poo. It means I can air the place out straight away.

    Brilliant idea about the Blue Cat liquid paraffin, I’d forgotten I used it for a constipated cat a while back – it works wonders!

    Hi, I completely agree with Blue Cat. To be honest, I don’t really understand the vet’s point; one poo a day is exactly the norm. If it's at roughly the same time every day, then that’s even more perfect. ;) Our cat also meows quite a bit when he goes to the loo—sometimes before, sometimes after, and sometimes both. :) Honestly, everything you’ve described sounds like a perfectly healthy cat to me. :)

    Yeah, I guess it must be a bit like it is with your Siamese... Plus, my cat doesn't really tend to constantly lick her bum as if she’s in pain; if anything, she’s actually a bit lax with her hygiene in that department. But she doesn't have any trouble passing her stools, and there’s no apparent pain. Anyway, if you all reckon it’s normal, I’ll stop worrying over nothing like a hyper-anxious mother hen in need of some unhealthy fussing! 😁

    @Trifouillette,

    Yes, I saw what you said about the anus, but the way it looks doesn't necessarily mean the cat is in any discomfort.

    An anus can naturally look a bit red without there being any underlying health issue. The only real way to tell is to watch the cat when it’s doing its business. If they seem to be really struggling to pass anything, then try liquid paraffin. Otherwise, just leave them be.

    My Siamese has an anus that’s, shall we say, not exactly photogenic. And she has no trouble at all going for a poo. It’s true that against her light fur, her piggy-pink bum (which isn’t always sparkling clean) really stands out...

    @Blue

    Landoras asked for it because her bum is irritated... the little kitty's, of course 😉
