Cats and fibreglass insulation

Hello!

I’d like some advice if possible. My cat (6 years old) got stuck in the loft for a full day and night without me realising. I found her earlier this afternoon. There’s a lot of fibreglass insulation up there and I’d like to know if there are any risks, and what they might be? (And if there are any precautions I should take). She seems fine; I’ve fed her because she must have been starving, and she ate the lot. I just have a feeling she’s sniffing a bit? Her eyes don’t seem irritated at all, anyway. I might be worrying over nothing, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks in advance for your replies! :)

    Hi there,

I think if it’s just a one-off, it’s probably not a big deal, as long as she doesn’t suffer from any health issues like asthma, for example.

I’ve actually got a little story about this, though I can’t quite remember when I last shared it.

I used to live in a bungalow with glass wool insulation in the loft. No issues there. Then I put in a patio and a frame with bamboo over the top for some shade.

I had a Siamese cat who used to use that frame to help her get into the loft by squeezing under the roof tiles.

It was an old house, so the gaps hadn't been sealed off.

She used to make herself little nests in there... obviously, I’m telling the story with hindsight now, because I hadn't noticed a thing at the time and it had been going on for ages.

Until the day she started losing fur on her belly and her sides.

Off to the vet—they weren’t really sure what was wrong. We tried special shampoos and meds, and it dragged on for a while. She wasn't the easiest to handle, so I gave up on the shampooing pretty quickly!

I must have done a lot of head-scratching back then 😁 I don’t remember all the details now, but eventually, I went up to the loft one day, saw these little hollows in the insulation, and it just clicked.

Did a bit of DIY to nail some boards over the gaps.

Kali was cured! ✌ Her fur grew back (slowly but surely).

    Hope you enjoyed my story?

Here’s a bonus cat for you.

Agate, tucked up in bed for the day.
