Cat swallowed some string

Hi everyone,

Today my 1-year-old cat swallowed quite a long piece of string. I heard her eating something under my bed; she'd brought over that pink string she usually plays with and before I had the chance to grab it, she'd already swallowed it.

I've been keeping an eye on her for about an hour now and she seems absolutely fine. She's eaten her dry food and is running around the house.

I'd like to know what the risks are and if I should take her to the vet?

Have a good day, everyone 👍

Swallowing a piece of string can be really serious for cats, even if they seem fine at first. There is a risk that the string gets ‘anchored’ in the gut and causes it to bunch up or cuts into it (a linear foreign body). This can become dangerous hours or even days later. Since your cat is still young and https://allyspin-de.de/ it was a long piece of string, it’s worth giving the vet a call today – especially if you aren’t sure of the length. Take them to the vet immediately if you notice: vomiting, lethargy, tummy pain, loss of appetite, or gagging.
Even without symptoms, it’s better to get it checked out early.

    Hi there,

It is vital that you keep a very close eye on your cat after they've swallowed a piece of string, as this can lead to serious risks like a bowel obstruction or internal damage if the string gets caught up in their digestive system.

If your cat is still eating, drinking, and playing as usual, that’s a good sign for now, but do stay alert for any changes in their behaviour or condition.

Signs to look out for include a loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, struggling to go to the toilet, or tummy pain (especially if they seem tender when you touch their belly).

If any of these symptoms appear, see a vet immediately, as an intestinal blockage is an emergency that may require urgent treatment. Even if your cat seems fine for the moment, don't hesitate to give your vet a ring to explain the situation; they’ll be able to advise you on the next steps to take.

    Hope this helps,

    Apolline

Whatever you do, don't pull on the string! Just snip it off as it comes out. If you pull it, you could cause a serious injury by tearing the intestines if it’s got tangled up inside. It’s a good sign that it’s actually starting to come out on its own. You can give them a little bit of olive oil or liquid paraffin to help things along.

Hello, my cat’s just had a poo and there’s some string sticking out of his bum. I can’t get it out, is this serious?

    Hi there,

You can add some liquid paraffin to their food. This oil passes straight through the gut and helps lubricate the stools (it has no side effects). This should help with passing the piece of string.

However, if Calypso isn't doing their usual poos at the normal rate, you'll need to see a vet for an X-ray of the intestines.

    Hi there,

Thanks so much for all your replies 🙂

Everything is fine with Calypso for now, but I’ll keep an eye on things.

Have a lovely day and thanks! 👋

Hi there, the same thing happened to my one-year-old cat. I’m not sure exactly how long the thread your cat swallowed was, but mine passed it in her poo without any trouble at all. Don’t worry too much; it’ll likely be in her litter tray by tomorrow morning.

Hi there, The risks can be quite high; it might pass through on its own, or it could be a total emergency. If you're unlucky, the string can get tangled up in the digestive tract and cause a lot of damage. I’m not sure if it’s necessary or if there’s still time to see a vet, but either way, keep a very close eye on your cat. At the first sign of any symptoms—loss of appetite, vomiting, or lethargy—dash straight to an emergency vet, as it’s a sign the string is stuck. If the string does start to come out, there’s a chance it won't all come out at once. If you see a bit of string poking out of your cat’s bottom, whatever you do, do not pull it. Just snip it off close to the skin without hurting the cat and carry on monitoring them. :) Everything should be fine, but in these sorts of cases, it’s better to be safe and keep a close watch rather than acting too late. Don't worry too much, but it's definitely worth staying vigilant.
