Cat rolling in her litter tray

Hi everyone,

I adopted a cat in early March from a rescue that works with foster families. She's a female born in July 2018 and was spayed just before she arrived. It took us quite a while to be able to get near her and win her trust. She's very affectionate now, but still a bit wary. I have loads of questions to ask you to help me understand her behaviour, but I'll start with the one that puzzles me the most. My cat regularly rolls around in her litter tray, whether it's just been changed (so it's clean) or if it's been there for a few days. Just to clarify, I don't use bleach to clean it, and I scoop out the poop every time she goes or as soon as I get home. She's my only cat. She is fully house-trained; there are never any accidents outside the tray. She never goes outside, which was a commitment I made to the rescue, and anyway, I live near a very busy road and there are some people in my village who don't like cats and wouldn't hesitate to harm them. So, I wanted to know why my little Orianne loves rolling in her litter so much. I use unscented Catsan litter. Thanks for your replies and advice!

In feline jargon, we don't say tricolour or tortoiseshell and white, we call them calico 😁

    She really is stunning!

Hi, it’s not unusual for timid or insecure cats to roll in their litter to comfort themselves. The scent of their own waste reassures them, and unless the tray has been bleached, a bit of that smell always lingers even after you’ve changed the litter. Now I understand why Pimousse used to roll in his litter when I first got him. This forum really is a goldmine of information and great advice.

Hi there, I once had a senior girl who was missing half her tail, one eye and one ear, and she only had three legs. Yes, they really do exist! When I first got her, she used to roll around in her litter tray. As @Blue Cat mentioned, and after checking with the rescue centre she came from, she was just very timid and it made her feel safe. A month after she arrived at mine, she stopped doing it completely.

Hi there, Some anxious or insecure cats will roll in their litter tray to comfort themselves. The scent of their own waste makes them feel safe, and unless the tray is thoroughly bleached, a bit of that scent will always remain even after you've changed the litter.
