Brown spots in my cat's eye

Hi everyone,

I've noticed that my cat now has some brown spots in her eye that weren't there before. I've been searching online and on this forum, but I can't tell if it looks serious or not. Given the current lockdown, I'm a bit wary of heading to the vet without getting some advice first – what do you think? I've included a photo below.

Thanks to anyone who replies, and all the best to everyone!

Here’s the list of veterinary ophthalmologists in the UK

You should definitely look for a specialist eye vet who’ll be able to give you more information. Don’t hesitate to see a specialist; there are more and more of them these days, but honestly, your own vet should have suggested the referral themselves. When my vet is out of their depth, they always refer me to someone more specialised, and I really respect them for that. It could be something completely minor or something quite serious, so the best thing is to find the right vet. You could also try the university vet schools, though there aren’t many of them and you’d need to live fairly close by. In the big cities, there are referral clinics with all kinds of specialists, which are a real godsend for our pets.

"You aren't going to get an answer on a site like this, but your vet will be able to tell you if it's nothing to worry about." Hi, my vet actually doesn't know what it is. Apart from keeping an eye on it and taking photos of the eye to track any changes, they haven't given me any advice, which is why I'm looking for answers online. Have a good day.

You won't find the answer on this site; however, your vet will be able to tell you if it's anything to worry about.

Hi Lilo, I’ve just seen your post. My cat has the exact same spot... I had the vet round but they couldn’t see anything because the pupil was dilated. Did you get a diagnosis from your vet? Thanks for your reply. Hi there, I’ve just noticed that my cat has the exact same thing, it's been about a week, maybe two. Could you let me know how yours is getting on, please? Has he lost any weight? Is he more tired than usual? I’m so scared it might be a melanoma (from symptoms I’ve found online). Mine is a ginger cat and he’s just turned 3 (on the 17th of July), how about yours?

Hi Lilo, it would be helpful to know if she’s positive or negative for FeLV (feline leukaemia). Make the most of the vet visit to ask for the tests. Spots can indeed appear with age, as mentioned in the link, but I noticed on her page that she was only 4 (she’s 5 now), which is why it’s better to worry over nothing than to miss the chance for early treatment. Let us know how she gets on, thanks. Liza

Thanks for the advice, I’ll do that too!

I’m calling today, I’ll keep you all posted :)

If I were you, I’d get in touch with my vet, maybe even send them the photo to see what they think; only they’ll be able to tell you if it’s nothing to worry about. Lockdown or not, they still take emergencies if needed and can give you advice over the phone. Such a funny little face in that close-up, he’s absolutely adorable!

I’m calling the specialist eye vet first thing tomorrow! I’ll see what she thinks...

Yes, she really does have the cutest little face 😊

Hi, how old is he? Some cats develop different coloured patches on their iris as they grow up; it’s genetic. However, given the brown colour, I’m wondering if it might be blood. You’ll need a vet to take a look, though it doesn’t strike me as an emergency since both eyes are perfectly clear. Hi! She’s five years old. Yes, her eyes are very clear apart from that, but it’s true she didn’t have these spots before and there seem to be more and more of them...
