Why is my cat meowing, running around everywhere, and biting?

Hello everyone,

I'm turning to you because I'm struggling to understand my cat at the moment, but I don't think there's a real "problem" as such — which is why I don't want to bother the vet about it.

At the beginning of September, my partner and I took in an abandoned kitten we found in a car park (he was rummaging through bins, etc.). He was already weaned and litter-trained — he figured out the litter tray, dry food, and water straight away — and we estimated he was around 4 or 5 months old.

He's now about 7 or 8 months old, and I think he's had his adult teeth for a good month or so. He's a really sweet cat and honestly no trouble at all — playful and friendly with everyone.

We made a bit of a mistake when he was little by letting him bite and nibble our hands during play... he still does it now and it can hurt a bit, but it's never aggressive so we just let it go (especially me). I think I've also been a bit overprotective of him (again, mainly me) — I've picked him up for a cuddle every time I come home, and I'd rather say "no" thirty times than actually tell him off or "correct" him (I've never laid a finger on him with a slipper or a rolled-up newspaper or anything like that, whatever some people might recommend, rightly or wrongly).

Over the past few weeks, I've noticed some odd behaviour for two reasons:

1. He's always slept in our bedroom, either at the foot of the bed or in his basket. Now he sleeps further away, but in the mornings when he hears us waking up, he lets out a little meow and comes to snuggle with me UNDER the duvet... he purrs away, but then suddenly dashes off meowing and tears around the place.

2. During the day too, he'll occasionally start meowing and sprinting around the flat — I have no idea what he wants. When I call him, he comes running with a little meow, but he doesn't want a cuddle; he bites, and if I try to pick him up it only makes things worse.

I don't quite understand it — to me, if he's meowing (more than just a single meow, I mean), it's because he wants something, but I can't work out what. Sometimes playing with him settles him down, sometimes it doesn't. What do you think is going on? Is he bored? Could it be hormones? (He hasn't been neutered and he's obviously growing up...) Is it just his age?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for your replies!

Hi everyone, I’m bumping this old thread as my cat is showing the exact same behaviour as Dynastiehan’s cat, but mine is nearly 8 years old and was neutered when he was young. This started out of the blue a few days ago. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Get him neutered. It’s the only way. If you don't want to, then be prepared for a cat that marks his territory everywhere. Tom cat urine smells incredibly strong as it is, so if your flat starts reeking of it... Good luck!

The most urgent thing is to get him neutered as soon as possible, otherwise he’s likely to start spraying all over your house. Once he gets into the habit, you’ll have a real problem on your hands...

Give him a firm and definitive "NO" whenever he bites. If he scratches, trim the tips of his claws – it’ll be less painful – and always stick to that firm "NO".

I really get the impression that you haven't understood the need to get your cat neutered as soon as possible........

Right, thanks everyone for your replies. I didn't think his meowing sounded like a cat looking for a mate at all, and I don't think there are even any females in the area anyway, but you never know. I'm keeping an eye on him in any case.

As for the biting, I’m trying to be a bit stricter with him ^^' and it’s actually starting to work a bit already.

    Thanks!

Well, it's simply his hormones starting to kick in. It’s perfectly normal at that age, so my advice is, if you don't want him spraying everywhere and making your stuff—and the whole flat—stink, get him neutered sharpish. And by sharpish, I don’t mean in a month’s time, I mean in a few days at most. If you wait too long, he might get into the permanent habit of marking his territory.

...before he wanders off and starts marking. Mind you, at his age you're lucky he hasn't started spraying yet!

As I said, your cat really needs to be neutered. There’s a very strong chance there's a female in season nearby, so whether he’s trying to bolt or starting to spray, I’d definitely recommend getting him snipped!

Regarding the biting, I have semi-feral cats myself. The last one I took in was only 15 days old, but she was taught the ropes by the other cats I had at the time. In your case, you’ll have to train him yourself because this little lad was either abandoned or left to fend for himself and doesn't know his limits with biting. Since you don't have any other cats, it’s down to you to make him understand—use either a firm NO or a high-pitched cat-like yelp (hard to write that, meeeeeee lol) to show him he's hurting you so he gets the message. I've never shouted at my cats, but my situation is a bit different because when I rescued my last feral one, I already had eight semi-ferals at home, so they schooled each other!!!

You really mustn't let him keep biting, for your own sake!! And for your partner and any friends coming round lol.

Laurence and her Noah’s Ark — do watch out for windows etc., because if there really is a female in season, he’ll be out the door at the first chance he gets; he won't be able to help himself!
