Spaying – my kitten has started pulling her dressing off!

Hi everyone!

I’ve got a little 6-month-old kitten who was spayed during the day on Wednesday. She has a dressing on, but since yesterday or this morning, she’s started tearing it off... what should I do? Especially as part of the incision is starting to show...

She’s had stitches (I know there are other ways of "sewing them up").

My parents and I wanted to just take the dressing off as it’s not doing much now, but we’re worried about doing the wrong thing... The vet nurse said that cats usually pull their bandages off after three days, but she didn't really say if that was okay or what we should actually do...

Is your cat on antibiotics? My dog didn't have any bandages or dressings on her scar, and the stitches weren't taken out until after 12 days. However, she wasn't allowed to touch it at all, so she had to wear a cone.

In five days, the wound should be completely closed and clean, so you won't have to worry about germs anymore.

The trouble is, once the bandage is off, it’s an open door for germs :( and they might pull the stitches out as well, and it’s far too early for those to come out :( keep us updated.

There shouldn't be any issues taking the bandage off ;) Hope only kept her bandage on for 48 hours. Just check that the wound is looking good, whether the stitches have come out and that she isn't messing with it.

My dog had her operation 15 days ago. No bandage, but she had to wear a cone for 10 days at night and during the day when we were out. She had her stitches out yesterday, it’s healed up perfectly—no more cone!!!

Whatever you do, don't remove the bandage... because dirt could get into the wound and it could lead to an infection... ask your vet for a cone. The vet nurse is useless...

A small cone should do the trick.
