Hi everyone, whenever my kitten purrs, he 'suckles' on any fabrics around (blankets, t-shirts...) and keeps kneading his claws in and out. Could this be because he wasn't fully weaned??

Thanks in advance. :-*

Hi, I’ve always had cats and they’ve all 'kneaded' (that’s the term for those paw movements, with or without claws, which mimic what they did when they were nursing to get milk from their mum as babies)!! It’s a feeling of well-being for them that definitely reminds them of when they were kittens. Gradually, they usually stop kneading on us humans and stick to woolly things, unless they’ve had a bit of a rough start (weaned too early and not given enough comfort afterwards). A friend’s adult cat used to try and suckle from all the guests, myself included!!! It felt a bit strange, I must say!! My current cat’s mum died when he was born, so I had to make up for it by letting him suckle my finger (only the finger mind!) and some wool, and let him knead on me and a woolly jumper during his first few months with us. Now that he’s a year old, he doesn’t suckle anything anymore, but he has his own woolly blankets on the sofa and the bed dedicated to his soothing 'regression' moments, which he usually uses before settling down for the night. Your cat is still tiny; give him a scarf or an old jumper to use while he’s on you. It’ll be more comfortable for you, and he’ll make it his own! It’s just completely normal behaviour for a kitten! Don't worry at all!!!

Thanks!! He’s less than 3 months old :S. When he puts his claws out while doing that, it’s painful, but oh well :/.

As for the blanket suckling, that could indeed be a sign of early weaning. However, the fact that he’s kneading with his claws out is less of a concern, I think. Plenty of cats do it, even those who were weaned at the right age. My kitten does it all the time, even though he wasn't separated from his mum until he was four and a half months old...

I’ll share my own experience, which might contradict Sahra a bit, but there we go ^^

Your little one was probably taken away from her mum too early, or they were separated when she was very young (which sadly does happen sometimes.)

Personally, I got my little girl (who’s two now) when she was still only drinking milk (no water). Since the previous owner swore she was fully weaned, was three and a half months old and all that, we believed them; yet we soon realised she’d only drink milk --' It wasn't possible to take her back to finish weaning.

She still kneads with her paws when we stroke her, but she doesn’t suckle. ^^

So I suppose it just depends on the cat :)

Some will suckle, others won’t. ^^

It could be that he was given or sold to you too early, so he didn't get much time with his mum. That’s just what I reckon, anyway. How old is he?

My cat (Smoothie) used to do that too, my vet explained why... It was about 4 years ago (a bit less... when I first got Smoothie, he was 3 months and 17 days old) so I don't really remember it that well anymore...

This behaviour in cats is often down to the kitten being taken away from its mum too early.

So they end up suckling on anything they can get their paws on!

Kittens knead their mum's belly and teats slowly with their front paws to help the milk flow. Cats that do this will knead a blanket or sometimes even their owner. This usually happens when a kitten is separated from its mother before they are 3 months old. (Is that what happened in your case?)

There isn't really a "fix" for it as far as I know...
