My cat's started peeing on plastic

Hi there, I’m having a bit of a problem with my girl peeing on plastic. No matter which room they're in, if there are any plastic items left out, she'll pee in or on them. I don't understand why she’s doing this as she’s always been perfectly house-trained; these little accidents have only started happening recently. Could the fact that we've got a new litter tray be causing this? She is still using the tray as well, though.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Best regards.

    Hi there,

I’m having the exact same issue with my cat. For about two weeks now, she’s hardly been using her litter tray, peeing next to it or even in the living room instead. She was passing blood, which meant a trip to the vet and a week of medication. Despite that, she’s still going outside her tray.

What’s also worrying me is that she’s even more distant than usual. I know she’s naturally timid and quite skittish, but she’s hardly coming to me for a fuss anymore and seems afraid of me.

I’m at a bit of a loss; I try to give her a stroke to reassure her when I can without forcing her, but it’s a struggle. In your opinion, do you think it’s a stress-related problem or just down to her health issues?

OK, thanks Dockman, I'll get to the vet as soon as possible. Better safe than sorry.

Hi there, Even if your cat has been house-trained for a long time, she can suddenly start peeing outside her litter tray overnight. This could be on the sofa, in your bed, or even on plastic bags. The main cause for this behaviour is often stress. Cats are very sensitive creatures, and if they aren’t feeling quite right, they express it... in strange ways! While we humans might head to a therapist's couch, a cat will just pee wherever they fancy. So, if you’ve recently rearranged your home or changed things around (like a new type of litter), she might not recognise her environment anymore. Her scent has likely disappeared or just isn't as comforting as it used to be! However, please be aware that this behaviour can also be a symptom of a urinary tract infection (UTI). It’s definitely worth checking with your vet if the problem persists. Best wishes.

I'm talking about the plastic carrier bags you put your shopping in, like those Tesco carrier bags.

Hi there, it’s possible it could be down to the smell of the plastic, or perhaps it’s actually because you’ve changed the litter tray. When you say "plastic", what exactly do you mean?!
