How can I remove black grease/oil from the kitten I've just rescued?

This is my third rescue. I found this little girl almost completely soaked in black oil or maybe grease. I gave her a warm bath a week ago using baby shampoo; I knew there was still some grime stuck to her skin, but I didn't want to push it and stress her out too much. She's eating really well and doesn't seem to be in any pain, but the grease is really stuck to her skin and I'm worried about her licking it. That's why I need a tip for removing this grease, which appears black in colour on her nose and ears in the photo. Thanks in advance for any advice.

How can I remove black grease/oil from the kitten I've just rescued?

Haha, anyway, I know my wipes even get rid of glue (wax residue) from wax strips, so I reckon they should be able to shift something like that over time. Make sure to give him a rinse afterwards though if your wipes aren't alcohol-free or fragrance-free; just use a damp flannel and then dry the little one off after :) I hope it works!

Ah yes, that’s a great idea, thanks. I’ll give it a go straight away with my Vichy. 👍

Yeah, I see what you mean. I reckon the only way it’ll come off is by massaging it regularly. You could also try some makeup wipes; they’re quite oily and great for shifting eyeliner (which is oil-based), so I think they might be able to get this off.

I passed that liquid grease stage a week ago; now he’s left with a kind of hard paste stuck fast to his skin and fur, and if I try to remove it with my fingers, all the fur just pulls out. I don’t think flour will help. Look at the black specks in the photo.

Washing-up liquid?! That’s harsh enough on our skin, so goodness knows what it’s like on a kitten’s... Personally, I’m not sure about using washing-up liquid (it’s a degreaser, so it’s much harsher than other things) on a cat. I think you just need to be patient and give them a good massage during every wash. My dog used to have a habit of nosing around under the bikes in the garage and getting covered in grease stains; we’d wash her with a proper dog shampoo, massage it in for a long time, and the grease would gradually come off. We sometimes had to do two shampoos a couple of days apart if it was particularly bad, but it does come off in the end.

    Hi Kitta,

To soak up all that grease, you'll need to completely coat the little guy in flour... :-)

Yes! The flour will absorb the grease. Don't be afraid to give him a really good dusting; don't hold back! (Even between his little toes, pads, etc., while being careful of his eyes, of course). Leave the flour to work for a good while (do this in a room where he can't make a mess of the rest of the house). After that, whatever you do, don’t brush him! Wash him straight away with a degreasing but NEUTRAL washing up liquid (ideally an organic or eco-friendly one). Dry him off thoroughly, and repeat the process two days later if there’s still some residue left...

    Good luck!

Hi there, it’s brilliant that you’ve rescued this little kitty!! For the grease, try some lukewarm water and massage it in gently... I think it’ll come out over time. They say oil cuts through oil, so try some soap and a good massage (in circles with your fingertips) gently; that should get most of it off... Otherwise, I’m not really sure :/
