Help! My kitten has terrible gas

Hi everyone!

I have a very cute little two-month-old kitten who has horrible gas! She's being wormed every fortnight at the vet, her vaccinations are all up to date, and she’s on 'baby cat' dry food from the pet shop, Royal Canin (following the vet's advice). I don't give her any milk or wet food. Despite all this, the smell is still absolutely awful...

Any advice?

It’s so sneaky... honestly, it’s just incredibly complicated.

I’m faaaaar from being an expert when it comes to cat food, but Hill’s kitten food is actually pretty good, isn't it? 46% chicken meat and 65% poultry in total. Granted, there’s maize in it, but the meat content isn't too bad, is it?

Good evening, I bought some Hill's kitten dry food from the pet shop as it had the highest protein content, and the problem is really starting to clear up (phew!). It's actually quite good value; I picked up a small 0.9lb bag for about £5.30 to test it out. She tends to pick through them and eats the Royal Canin first, but she still ends up eating the others. Have a good evening! =)

Supermarket wet food should definitely be avoided, as should the brands you find in pet shops or at the vet. However, there are products with excellent ingredients (grain-free, with no animal or plant by-products) that are easy to find online.

A few examples of high-quality tins and pouches are Terra Faelis, Catz Finefood, Animonda, Feringa, and Mac's. You can find all these brands on Zooplus, and some of them offer really great value for money!

As for dry food, I don't think you'll find any decent grain-free brands in the usual pet shops... Again, the best products are available online, or in the occasional specialist store.

The dry food you’ve bought is probably full of carbs and grains, which is why the issue isn't really clearing up; I’d suggest having a look at this thread: http://wamiz.com/chats/forum/mon-chaton-a-la-diarhee-depuis-2-mois-47175.html – it’ll help you understand the ins and outs of it :)

Thanks everyone for your replies =)

I'm heading to a pet shop this Saturday to buy a different variety of dry food (higher in protein). The problem hasn't changed =/ and yes, his stools are soft. The vet had advised me to stop the wet food because it was from the supermarket and might have been causing the diarrhoea. But anyway.

As the others above have suggested, it’s essential that you change their diet! You should switch to grain-free dry food (despite what your vet says—they often just recommend the brands they sell rather than what’s actually best for an obligate carnivore!) and make sure you’re giving them wet food every day. This is vital for hydration, as cats have sensitive kidneys and don’t tend to drink enough water on their own.

If you follow these tips, those flatulence issues should be sorted out in no time. 😉

    Hi.

Any loose stools or even diarrhoea?

Hi there, Royal Canin dry food... It’s grain-based, which cats can’t digest properly given they are carnivores and not omnivores. So, the wind might well be a result of this grain-heavy dry food.
