Flank spaying

Cléo (who I'm fostering) was spayed yesterday. All my previous cats were spayed on their bellies, but this time it was done on her side. I always thought there would be a hole on each side, but it’s just one incision on one side, and it's smaller than the midline ones. Why has the method changed? What’s the difference between the two? Why do some vets do it on the belly (like my usual vet) while others do it on the side (like the rescue's vet)?

So, apparently, 'female cats that have had a so-called midline operation are prone to hernias further down the line (after a year or more) due to jumping or other things they do, as the intestines are heavy in some cats and can cause the scar to pop, resulting in a hernia.' Fact or fiction? Could a vet shed some light on the subject?

Ah, right. Maybe one day you'll be able to find out if my vet is actually telling the truth. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, it depends on the vet. For Pomponette it was on her tummy, and for Milia it was on her side.

My vet has always done a midline incision, and an ovariectomy, except for Bonnie who had a hysterectomy because she had cysts. This is the first time I’ve had a girl spayed via the flank, and this time it’s the vet from the kitten rescue.

Yes, of course, I get what you mean Moonlight, but either way, female cats aren't normally supposed to go into heat anymore.

Oh, right, I see. And what about yours, Margaux? What does the vet do for them?
