Hi everyone, my cat has some skin issues. The vets can't find out what's wrong, but it's getting worse. Does anyone have any thoughts?

What should I do? Thanks. Cat skin issues

Hi, the vet’s put him back on cortisone and antibiotics. We’ll have to see if he gets any better. Thanks.

    Hi there,

Poor thing 😿 It really looks like quite a bad irritation… skin problems in cats can sometimes stem from several different causes: allergies, parasites, fungal infections, stress, or even a food sensitivity.

If your usual vet can’t find the cause despite several attempts, I agree with the advice given above: a specialist veterinary dermatologist can sometimes get to the bottom of things with more specific tests.

In the meantime, try your best to:

    • stop him from scratching too much (use a buster collar if necessary)

    • make sure his flea treatments are up to date, even if you don’t see any fleas

    • avoid using any human creams without a vet's advice

    • keep the areas clean and dry

    • keep an eye on whether he loses his appetite or seems lethargic

I’ve seen cats with lesions that seemed "mysterious" before, where the cause ended up being an allergy or an infection that was hard to detect at first. Hang in there, it’s really not easy 😔

    Hi,

Has your vet carried out any further dermatological tests? (skin scraping, fungal culture, cytology...)

If the lesions aren’t improving despite following their advice, the safest option would be to contact a specialist veterinary dermatologist to get him treated.

In the meantime, if he’s scratching, I’d recommend putting a buster collar on him to prevent the lesions from getting any worse.

    Best of luck,

    Maëlla
