Flank spaying

Cléo (who I'm fostering) was spayed yesterday. All my previous cats were spayed on their bellies, but this time it was done on her side. I always thought there would be a hole on each side, but it’s just one incision on one side, and it's smaller than the midline ones. Why has the method changed? What’s the difference between the two? Why do some vets do it on the belly (like my usual vet) while others do it on the side (like the rescue's vet)?

I think maybe the vet hurt her during the op... anything’s possible ;)

Anyway, I clearly remember the day she came home after the surgery, she was completely out of it and kept bumping into the walls...

Just so you know, a flank spay is usually less of a hassle during the post-op recovery. Maybe a midline incision is just easier for them, though. I’d definitely like to find out...

I don't know, do you reckon it might still be a bit tender or is it just that she doesn't want her tummy being touched, like loads of cats?

It clearly specifies 'some', and I was just asking if it was a fact or a myth, nothing more. Because some vets say that abdominal surgery could lead to a hernia, so I'm waiting for confirmation. There you go, CANDIMARIE!!!

Hi everyone, I think it’s actually a good thing that the surgery isn’t always done on the belly anymore. My cat was spayed when she was a tiny kitten, and ever since the day of the operation, she hasn’t really liked having her tummy rubbed or being picked up, etc. She tries to bite and defend herself as if she’s still in pain, even though it was all a very long time ago now... Is she the only one who’s reacted like this to the op? Thanks :)

NATTYGANN, years ago when it was done on the belly, my cats never had any trouble -

For dogs too, it’s done on the side -

NattyGann, I’ll try to remember to ask my vet, I’ve got to pop in before the end of the week anyway. I’ll see what he says.
