Cat ill after eating a bird?

Hi all,

I have a 5-year-old cat who is usually very active, quite vocal, and loves her food. This morning, she caught a bird and ate the lot... (there is still a wing left in my garden, if anyone is interested...).

Since then, she has just been lying there, tucked up in her blankets. She hasn't eaten (well, she has had a bird...) and hasn't been out to do her business. It's really not like her to stay lying down all day; I put it down to her digesting her meal, but I'm starting to wonder if it could be something else... It's only been about ten hours, so I'm not worried just yet, just a bit curious:

Do you know if there are any illnesses that a bird could pass on to a cat?

Thanks, and RIP to the bird...

even if it's just theories, that works for me[.]

you're right, getting another opinion is always reassuring

and it’s also a relief that none of you jumped in with: "Oh my god! She’s definitely caught bird-eating HIV!"...

The goal isn't to judge anyone either ;)

As you’ve suggested, I’m going to keep an eye on her behaviour tonight and tomorrow morning, and if I have any doubts, I’ll head to the vet. Anyway, thanks for the quick replies!

Don't hesitate to see the vet. The bird could be ill or have a sore bone etc... it’s better to have a wasted trip than to wait too long :)

Hi, it might not be that the bird was ill, but maybe your cat swallowed a bone that's gone down the wrong way... Or it's got stuck somewhere; usually, cats crunch them up, but sometimes they swallow them without chewing properly... Keep an eye on your cat’s behaviour, make sure he’s drinking plenty of water... go and see a vet. Zanaya beat me to it!
