Wondering if my cat is a Bengal cross

Hi everyone, I have a 4-month-old domestic shorthair crossbreed. The vet mentioned that, given the texture of his coat and his perfectly symmetrical marbled markings, he could well be a Bengal cross—which wouldn't be out of the question since the dad is unknown 😂 It doesn't really change anything for me as I love him to bits regardless, I'm just curious because some of his personality traits are quite surprising. He's incredibly agile but also a brilliant companion for the kids, really playful and cuddly. He's a skilled hunter and climber who actually enjoys the water!

Hi there, your kitten is very cute! :) Personally, I don't see anything that suggests he's a Bengal. A cat's coat pattern isn't really proof of a specific breed (with a few exceptions), and a marbled pattern is no different. Besides, it’s very unlikely you’d find an unneutered male Bengal just wandering around outside anyway! :) Most of the time, vets don’t actually know much about breeds; they see a big cat and suddenly it’s a Maine Coon, or if the cat is grey, they’ll call it a Chartreux. In any case, he’s absolutely adorable! :)

OK I DIDN’T KNOW THAT, I’ve actually just seen online that there are rosetted Bengals and marbled Bengals and other types of Bengals?

WELL THEN, you’ll see if he has the kind of personality where he’s jumping all over the place and needs loads of exercise (purebred Bengals are often a real handful); a crossbreed will probably be calmer.

To be honest, I was a bit sceptical when the vet told me that, but marbled Bengals do exist – it's a more recent variety, as you can see in the photo.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

He was smaller in that photo and I’m struggling to upload a more recent one. You're right, he definitely needs to burn off plenty of energy – he treats the house like his own personal obstacle course! 😂 We let him out in the garden so he can hunt and climb trees. I’m trying to post some more recent photos as he’s changed quite a bit.

    A PHOTO would be great.

Mind you, if the vet says so, they’re probably right, and you’ve already seen that feisty and very energetic Bengal temperament – they need loads of exercise to burn off all that energy.
