Experts urge owners to do one important thing to help prepare for firework night

By Greta Inglis•

With Bonfire Night fast approaching, experts have advised of the most important thing owners can do to help prepare their dogs for fireworks.

Research by Guide Dogs suggests that up to 63% of dogs across the UK are impacted by firework noise on Bonfire Night.

Despite this, 79% of owners do nothing to help prepare their pets, with 35% of people unaware that desensitisation to the noise could be helpful.

Free training footage

The charity has now released The National Fireworks Archive, a free training video compiled using real-life footage and sounds.

The tool has been designed to help owners desensitise their dogs to the noise before the 5th of November, beginning at the lowest volume possible during short sessions of 2-5 minutes, 1-2 times per day.

Still time for desensitisation

“Fireworks night is just round the corner but there’s still time to start desensitising beloved pets now." explained Haley Andrews, of Guide Dogs.

“By introducing the sounds gradually, at a level their dog can cope with, owners can give their pet, and their household, the best possible chance of having a calmer Bonfire Night.”

The volume should be increased while dogs remain relaxed, with different sounds introduced very carefully.

On the night itself, owners can help keep their dogs safe by taking them out for a last toilet break before dark, closing the curtains and offering calming music. It is best to leave dogs to settle where they feel most comfortable, offering soft bedding to nestle in as far away from windows and noise as possible.
