Cries behind a building
A woman was out walking in Athens, Texas, when she heard faint whimpering coming from behind a building. Concerned, she followed the noise and discovered a tiny cage where several puppies were crammed on top of each other. They were left in the baking sun, with no access to food or water. She immediately called Athens Animal Services, and two rescuers rushed to the scene.
They counted 16 puppies of clearly different ages, all thin and starving. The rescuers pulled them out of the cage one by one, Kansas Scriven, the shelter manager, told The Dodo.
A puppy saved just in time
Two of the puppies needed urgent veterinary care and were rushed back to the shelter. Sadly, one of them did not survive. But the other, who the team feared would not make it, made an unexpected recovery. Syringe-fed by the staff, he regained his strength before their very eyes. "You could literally see him coming back to life," Scriven said.
Fifteen puppies in foster care
The shelter then found another organisation, Pets Fur People, to take the puppies in. The 15 survivors are now in foster homes, waiting to be adopted. Scriven expressed her gratitude to the walker, who took the time to investigate instead of just walking by. She believes the woman's call saved their lives.
