Abandoned because he is deaf: this brave dog is now a national hero

By Ludivine Mazzotti•

Axel is a lovely pup who spent part of his life behind bars in a Michigan rescue shelter.

No one wanted to adopt the poor pup for a truly heartbreaking reason – Axel is completely deaf.

Fortunately, his life took a completely different turn the day Sergeant Mollie Karazim from the Michigan National Guard came to meet him at the shelter.

Finding his purpose in life

The soldier immediately saw the pup's incredible potential. He was loyal, affectionate, and had the perfect energy level for the active life of a military unit. Mollie decided to adopt him, knowing she would need to teach him commands using hand gestures and visual signs.

Since being adopted, Axel has mastered more than 50 commands! The bond between the clever pup and his owner is absolutely incredible. She gave him a home and a purpose in life, and he returns her love tenfold.

A national hero

Axel trained for several years to join Mollie's military unit, and recently, his dream came true. The lovely dog is now officially the battalion's mascot and companion dog.

Life on duty

On a daily basis, the pup takes part in military exercises and joins the soldiers in the field. For his duties, he even has his very own gear, including a vest and collar specially designed for his role.

Axel's presence is highly valued by the soldiers. He helps to ease tension and often makes it easier to start conversations. We are incredibly impressed by this hero's journey – well done to Axel and Mollie!
