Dog falls into icy water, trapping owner in a deadly situation until a stranger steps in

By Ludivine Mazzotti•

Back in 2006, Eric Green was out walking his dog, Copper, near a canal in New Jersey, USA.

Sadly, on that particular day, their peaceful walk took a sudden and terrifying turn.

It all started when Copper, a Bernese Mountain Dog, spotted some ducks. Without a second thought, he bolted towards them.

The ice gives way

With the heavy dog running at full speed, the ice on the canal gave way beneath his paws. Eric immediately ran over to save his beloved pet, but sadly, the ice shattered under his own feet too. He plunged into the freezing water, completely unable to pull himself out.

For 15 long minutes, he tried everything to scramble out, but the biting cold slowly numbed his body. Eric genuinely believed he and his dog were going to die in the freezing water.

A stroke of fate

But fate was on their side. At that very moment, a driver passing by the canal noticed some movement that caught his eye. He pulled over and spotted a dog in the water, followed by a human hand reaching up out of the icy depths.

The driver didn't hesitate for a second, knowing that every moment counted. He drove his vehicle to the other side of the canal and threw a rope to Eric. However, the young man's fingers were so frozen that he couldn't grip it.

In a stroke of genius, the driver tied the rope to his pick-up truck and then secured it around his own waist to haul Eric safely onto the bank. He then did exactly the same to rescue Copper. Thanks to this brave stranger, Eric and his dog survived. The two men have since become close friends after an ordeal that changed their lives forever!
